I'm on a real 2 week whistle stop tour and a 20hr train journey might just kill me...

Got a cheapo Charter flight to Trv fro London so the $105 doesn't bother me too much.. + I made a bit of money this year ( at last ! )

I can tell you one thing having flown both Jet and IA in India quite a lot; especially Jet: IA has possibly the best take offs and landings. Cant say much about the cabin crew, but the flight crew is top class.

as for confirmations, as soon as you get to where ever in india, just call the local ia number on your ticket and i am sure they ll sort out your 'reconfirmations'! Usually it is not required, OK is OK now!

Indian Airlines have improved a lot . Delays and poor service is more the exception now in my opinion.

well, I understand you point about 20 hour train ride. If your goal is to see a bit of the South, you couldpepper the journey to and from Trivandrum-Chennai with some of the best the deep S has to offer! The possibilities abound.

but hey, if ya wanna fly, go for it

Last year I flew Trv & trained to Madurai & Kodai ( via Kochi ) and narrow guaged it over the Ghats.. and the year before did the Kochi Allepy Quilon thing. Year before that did the Panaji, Hampi, Bangalore Mysore thing..

It's just that I usually get 2-3 weeks each time so I though this time fly Madras - Bus Mahabs - Pondi - train Trichy / Tanjore / Trivandrum...

Am I missing anything obvious ?

see, there's this train, one of my fave routes- called Chola Express. Leaves Chennai like 0800 in am or something, hits damn near all of 'em, and has that most precious of all train items- 1nonA!!!!! usually no problem at all walking onto it, as it's basically a commuter train for Tamils, and you might even find carnaic music at the stations!
jeesh, why oh why am I not there . . . (weeps silently)
