Indian Air Passes

Does anyone have information on the air passes within India? I'm wondering if it is really worth it, both financially and practically, to purchase one. My time is so short in India that I'm afraid I'll spend all my time arranging for and riding on trains. Also, since a few airlines offer the pass, which one would you recommend?

Thanks to everyone for making Indiamike.com the most informative and enjoyable site on India.

Just something from my guide book.

Fly around...
Indian Airlines has Circular route Multi-Flight deals.
They only allow a circular path, and no backtracking.

Indian Airlines
Discover India Fare - Unlimited travel on all internal flights for 15 days for $500, 21 days $750.

India Wonderfare - Seven days' travel in one region, $300

Jet Airways
Visit India Fare - Unlimited travel on their routes for 15 days $550; 21 days $800; 7 days regional fare (eg south India) $330

OR . . .
pick an interesting section of India and just travel nearby. No end of places you can explore that will keep you occupied for a long time. NO ONE has seen it all. I've been to India several times on the 3 week plan, and enjoyed it immensely, but never went much more than 1 or 2 states

Anyone with actual experience with these airpasses? Should they be ordered before I arrive? Is it hard to get tickets (full flights)? How long before departure do I need to make reservations?

Hope someone can assist.

J-- 12 days before the big trip!

Have bought the two-week one from Jet Airways, well worth it. Bought it at Mumbai airport a few hours before the first flight--no problems. I was advised by my travel agent to buy it in India, as opposed to over the phone to the Jet Airways office in the US (California), because the Indian offices have access to a greater number of flights and the overseas offices only take American Express. I paid by Visa in Mumbai.
