After checking in, you take your carry on with you through security, where they x-ray it, which is exactly the same thing that you are used to doing in European airports.
The difference at Indian airports is that you MUST have luggage labels on each of your carry on bags and on other things you are carrying such as handbags and camera cases. As soon as these have been x-rayed, the security officer should put a stamp on the luggage label to say it has been checked by security. Sometimes they forget to stamp a luggage label, and if they do, you will have to go all the way back through security before you can board the flight.

At check-in counter they will provide you tags for each of your cabin baggage. Attach one tag with each item. After the security check make sure that all of your tags are stamped.
Agree with Haylo that sometimes they forget, but before leaving the security area do make sure that your baggage tags have stamp on them. Happened with me once, I had to run back with the pilot himself while the boarding was going on. It was embarrassing! ![]() |

This also applies to international flights leaving from an Indian airport

For international, since the 1 carryon + 1 pocket book/purse/laptop bag applies, two need be stamped, and will probably get stamped.
