Hello Torryquine, sorry for short message, I’m traveling to India for first time,
Starting my trip in Darjeeling, then by train along the Ganges to varanasi Tried to book flight on line prices range from 200 to 51 pounds pp do not wont to pay 200, and the 51 sold out. Is it better to pay for tickets when I get there? |

Gosh I'm not sure Cobra, we booked our flights through an agent in Delhi but certainly we had no difficulty in changing some of our flights at very short notice and at no extra cost.
Others may be able to offer more advice. Which airline, Jet? |

Cobra, do you have to fly?
You can get to Darjeeling by taking a Rhajdhani Express train to New Jalpaiguri, then either take the Toy Train, a private Jeep or a shared Jeep up to Darjeeling - much more fun! That depends on what time you have available, of-course. |

Cobra, people on Indiamike are very kind and helpful ...... but it's also more fun and more satisfying if you do a little research of your own......
Ty this website www.indianrail.gov.in You can have lots of fun (and frustration) using it, but you can find information on literally thousands of trains. There are several trains running from New Delhi or Delhi to New Jalpaiguri. Most of them get into NJP too late for you to get the Toy Train up to Darjeeling, but plenty of time if you want to go by jeep. The Toy Train leaves at 9a.m and gets into Darj at 15.30 0 and is a great way to get there - but you might prefer to go by road. If you go from Delhi to NJP by The Brahmaputra Mail it will cost you a maximum of 700 rupees - a great deal less depending on what class you want to travel.. If you go by Rhajdhani it will be more - but then that includes all meals. Look at the website - I'm sure you will find it useful and enjoyable. If you need any further help, don't hesitate to ask! Enjoy your planning! ![]() |

The fastest train Delhi-NJ used to be 33 hours. This is from an old LP and I know guidebooks seem to be passé but they're quite useful for stuff like this

Judi, that is fast! The book's about 10 years old. With comparing here it usually looks to be correct still, but accidents will obviously occur! I know doing Varanasi-Kolkata-Darjeeling-Varanasi-Delhi were just like yr average lengthy trainrides, how long I couldn't tell you -- you just sit back and take in the scenery and sooner or later it's over.

I don't think the average speed of most of the Mail/Express trains has changed much over the years -- it is premium class trains that are faster, mainly due to fewer stops and priority scheduling. The current 'Trains at a Glance' lists a daily Rajdhani to NJP from New Delhi
-- M,Tu,W,F,Sat it is #2424 and goes by way of Patna. Departs 14:00 arrives NJP 11:10 the following morning. Fare is 2335 Rp for 2 a/c and 1560 Rp 3 a/c --Thursday and Sunday it is #2436 via Lucknow and departs 9:30 arriving at 11:10 the same as #2424. The fare is slightly higher at 2410/1645 Rp 2 a/c / 3 a/c, despite the extra 4 1/2 hours travel time. SL class is not available on the Rajdhanis. |

The nearest airport to darjeeling is Badgadogra. You can fly there from Kolkatta.
Otherwise its best to take North Eastern Frontier Express From Delhi to New Jalpaiguri. And ahhh..ride a jeep to that heaven. miles of smiles |

Bagdogra airport used to serve Delhi five days a week, couldn't tell you how it is today, google around for it or ask a travel agent. Whichever way you choose to fly doesn't matter much I'd think. A lengthier trainride by way of introduction to your new surroundings can be fun, it can also be too much for pretty much the same reasons. Having to deal with getting in and out of airports and stuff and into a city that isn't really your destination can also be a hassle I imagine, then again the same might go for train stations (Siliguri/New Jalpaiguri I certainly found a very unpleasant place but you might get stuck there for the night anyway. To make you feel better it was rainy and cold when I was there, maybe it's really very cheerful.) Hey India just is a hassle! I promise!
I had wanted to comment on some of today's trains making fewer stops but then I figured what do I know. Thanks to M2 for reassuring me I haven't completely lost it ![]() |
