Hi, El Zorro!
If you want the luxury of being picked up at the airport door and dropped at the hotel door, then I guess that 650 rupees isn't going to break the bank, but, if you don't mind lifting your bags on and off buses, there are certainly cheaper ways of going! Just ouside the entrance to the airport (at the T-junction) are the buses to Vasco.... they seem to leave every few minutes. The journey is only a few minutes, and they will drop you at the terminal where you change buses for Panjim. From there, a third bus will get you to Vagator. I found that local buses in India are so frequent that you never have to wait more than five minutes (unless you're talking late night), and there's never any hassle finding the right bus at the terminal, because there are plenty of willing (eager!) advisers. I'm sure that you would even have your bags lifted on and off for a few rupees (or for free, if the passengers are in a hurry). I can't remember exactly what the buses cost us -- certainly between 5 and 15 rupees per person per trip -- but I would imagine that you'd do the journey this way for less than 10% of the pick-up charge. Best of all, the bus trip is half the adventure, and you really feel like you're getting to know the place by the time you arrive at your hotel. In five weeks in India, we only ever used a taxi once, and that was solely because we didn't want to hurt the feelings of someone who thought that by arranging it he was doing us a favour. Give me public transport every time! |

Just to push this point further, there's no need, either, to take a taxi from your hotel in Mumbai to the airport. From Churchgate Station you can get a train (every 9 minutes during the day) to Andheri Station (or the stop before, Vile Parle) for something between 12 and 20 rupees. There are buses from Andheri, but probably you'll do as we did and take one of the 385643876 autorickshaws that are waiting at the station entrance.... cost about a further 45 rupees. This whole trip will take you about an hour -- less, if you're boarding the train further on than the Churchgate terminus.

There is this taxi fare board at the airport, the photo was taken a couple of years ago by an indiamike member called MisterUK.
http://www.indiamike.com/photopost/s....php/photo/555 The quoted price to Vagator is partially covered but is at least Rs600. So the Rs650 quoted by your hotel is a good option. As much as I agree with jarman_ah about how much fun short bus journeys can be, I think there a lot more fun when your not carrying your bags. |

Take it,,,,,,,
Anything under 800 is pretty good, you'll be in vagator within an hour & a half, a lot quicker than even the holiday coaches with hotel drop-offs or around the houses local ones. |
