gettin bumped...

Has anyone got any experience of having their flight bumped? Guess it applies to flying anywhere, but i've heard that airlines often overbook the flight, and will give you a free ticket and accomodation till the next one... sounds like a great deal if you're not in a rush.

Smile LOVE getting bumped!

Yup. Had the ultimate "getting bumped" experience about a year ago. I was on a "free" trip to Barbados (frequent flyer miles) and got bumped in both directions! Which meant TWO "free tickets," (see below) earned from a "free" flight! Heaven!

Going to Barbados, I arrived about 4 hours later than I would have if I'd taken my original flight. Coming back, I arrived approximately 20 minutes later.

I didn't earn actual "tickets," but cash vouchers good for buying future tickets -- $500 Canadian on Air Canada, and $300 U.S. on United (each enough for at least one domestic ticket).

If there are a lot of people in the waiting area and you think that the flight might be overbooked, go up to the counter and ask to be put on the list of possible bumpees (they'll call these people first, before making a general announcement). Also, if the airline gets desperate for volunteers, compensation rises -- bargaining allowed.
