I checked this route about 2 months ago, the only airline that used to fly this route (Jet, I think) stopped calling at Agra, I don't know if anything's changed since.

Cheers Steven explains why I couldn't find the info. It still appears on the network Map Of Indian Airlines!
So I guess it's the train or a stopover in Delhi!

The train timings are terrible (01.18) so why don't you fly to Delhi and either fly/train it to Agra.

Or you could stop off in Orchha, before picking up one of the many trains to Agra out of Jhansi!

I'd be tempted to use the following train (if I'd already been to Orchha).

Train 2189 departs Satna daily at 21:00 and gets to Agra Cant at 08:15

2A = Rs 962
3A = Rs 699
SL = Rs 268

I know it's going the long way round, but it's so well timed and only starts in Jabalpur, so should arrive at Satna on time.

The train also departs Chitrakut at 23:16.

But the roads from Khajuraho to Chitrakut look almost like back roads, and it's maybe 160kms, sounds painful.

The road to Chitrakoot is a pain in the butt, It took us 6-7 hours by taxi!! The taxi was a wreck by the time it got there. I've heard the road to Satna is only moderately better!!
Given the choice I would definitely go for the Orchha/Jhansi option. At least the roads are good most of the way and the choice of trains out of Jhansi is far better and DON'T require a reservation!
If you take the morning bus to Jhansi you would reach Agra in about 8-9 hours. Which is a lot faster than the Satna - Agra route!

If you travel on a Saturday there's this option from Mahoba the nearest train station to Khajuraho.

2177 CHAMBAL EXP *MAHOBA 12:35 AGRA CANTT 19:30

As the roads are that bad, I agree that Jhansi would be the best option.

In the rail budget they announced that Khajuraho will be connected to the rail network via Mahoba, this was listed in the 'most important' links list and suggested this link could be completed by the beginning of next year.

(I've no idea what happened to the Satna-Khajuraho-Lalitpur proposed new line)

Thumbs up

Work is in progress in the Mahoba - Khajuraho route, (may be still in workbook stage) but the railway station will be a little far from Khajuraho temples (may be for protection of the temples after they developed cracks from the planes flying over them from Khajuraho airport nearby). It later will be extended to Satna. That is what I gathered from local agencies when I visited Khajuraho in November 2006.
