flying to Nepal
Hi all,
I wonder if anyone can help me out with some flight information? I have lined up a volunteer situation in Katmandu for several months starting in October and despite the recent US state dept warnings regarding non-essential travel in Nepal I feel at this point I still want to go. I have decided to follow the state dept advice and avoid road travel and fly in. Can any tell me from what cities in India I can fly into Katmandu? My original plan was to spend the month before I go to Nepal traveling around Himachal Pradesh or perhaps Sikkim and Darjeeling is there anyway to fly in from those areas? |

Royal Nepal Airlines , Indian Air Lines, Jet Airways From Delhi , 50 - 55 mins to Kathmandu.
Another intresting way would be to cross over to the Nepal side from India and take a domestic flight. There are small border towns which have air connectivity to Kathmandu. From the eastern side Kolkatta is another option.

If you're gonna be near Darjeeling Bagdogra airport would be another one to check if there are no flights from there, used to be the closest airport to Gangtok as well. Guwahati might be an option. Bottom line, you can probably fly in from a lot of places.

India to Nepal by air
The only regular air routes from India to Nepal that I can vouch for are from Calcutta, Varanasi, Delhi, and Bombay. All of these international flights go to Kathmandu. In the 1990's there were occasional charter flights from Panjim, Goa to Kathmandu. Those charter flights were only once or twice per winter.

If you're going to be in Sikkim, you can drive down to the airport in Bagdogra in West Bengal (which is the closest airport to Sikkim and about 3-4 hours by car from Gangtok), then fly to Calcutta, which is a short flight - under 2 hours, and in Calcutta you can get a flight to Kathmandu. I think Indian Airlines and Royal Nepal both have flights out of Calcutta (should I be saying "Kolkata" now - oops!) to Kathmandu.

I'm not sure about Bagdogra but from a Google search on +"bagdogra airport" +kathmandu it would seem many travel agents for this region work with flights from Kathmandu - Bhadrapur which appears to be some Nepali border town near to Siliguri, look it up on http://www.expedia.com/pub/agent.dll?qscr=mmfn (works with javascript or I'd give you a direct link). You could try and narrow down the search yourself.
