Flying FROM India (return)

Hi! I am an Indian citizen in Hyderabad looking for fares to Toronto. Problem is I am finding ridiculous quotes like 1 lakh. The lowest is 68 000 on British Airways. I know this figure is inaccurate and expect the actual fare to be around Rs 30 000 because a friend of a friend once went to New York for around this price. Unfortunately I don't know how she went about getting this great price so I need some advice! !

How much do airfares cost from India (return) ?

PS - You folks in America must think how stupid this is but if you've been to Hyd recently you'll see our newspapers are not of much help in this..unlike yours.

Contact different travel agents in your city. Also check out http://www.makemytrip.com for fares

I am happy to be a part of IM ! Thanks so much for the recommendations,, I'll be sure to look into it.

Before I walk into a travel agent like some clueless idiot, I would like some ball park estimate of the price. (foreigners are not the only ones who get ripped off ha ha) Although I have the idea that it should cost 30 000 round trip, this information is not much up to date.

Has someone flown to north america (or UK for that matter) from india lately?

Air ticket prices to North America depends on the season. I would say that the average round trip ticket price from Hyderabad to Toronto will be in the region of Rs 40,000-50,000. It might go upto Rs 60,000 too depending the airlines you fly. Travel agents won't try to fool you too much because they know that you will go to another agent if they quote a very high price. Look around and enquire with a few agents. Call up makemytrip.com and get a quote. If you have any relatives/friends who have purchased tickets from reliable agents, contact them. Good luck.

If you fly from Delhi it might be slightly cheaper....I paid about 60,000 from Montreal to Delhi return (which is about a 5 hour drive from TO)--you might one slightly cheaper from Toronto--it's a larger city...with taxes, you can fly Delhi/Toronto for 60,000 (Air Canada)...

I'm flying from the other side of the continent Vancouver to Delhi for 56,000 Rs. Most of the fares I found on the internet before I went to a (Vietnmese ) travel agent were around a lakh. Probably isn't as much problem to get to Canada as away from it this season.

I paid 37,000 roughly for Chennai <-->London. It was from an agent that my partner's employers use so she often deals with them and I thought we might get a good deal. Their price was the same as BA's web price (which agents in UK will easily u8ndercut...). I complained bitterly, but they complaijned bitterly abiout their small margin! I didn't have time to shop around.

just a brief advice of caution before using make my trip

makemytrip may look like a nice site, their fares might actually be a little lower, however unless you are *absolutely* clear with the operators on chat, you will run into problems.

their customer service and the majority of their operators (and I've sadly had to deal with a few) are abysmal.

I don't wish to rant, however I briefly will share the MMT experience. I had purchased a ticket in March for June-September 2005, explicitly asking what the fee would be if I extended the ticket to December. Thus informed, I purchased and have been in India since June. Then last week I sought to make the change to December and was informed my ticket was valid for only FOUR MONTHS, though I was not informed at purchase nor did the fare rules appended to my ticket note this.

So I urge you if you do use them (and I'm now wary of using them) that you ask EVERY question.

My status now is basically fighting with them daily, being promised callbacks with none arriving. Although they have checked the chat logs and explicitly acknowledged it was their error not to inform me at purchase, they are dragging their feet, delaying, refusing to change my ticket until they are certain the airline won't charge them for extending the ticket.

Customer service, in truth, has been serviceless. And I still await a change, though my original departure date is in less than 2 days.

They have now decided that if the airline doesn't extend my ticket, then the responsibility of MakeMyTrip, in spite of acknowledging *their* error, and in spite of the fact that I would *not* have purchased the ticket had i known it would be unextendable through december, they take NO RESPONSIBILITY for their mistake.

NO customer service in other words, and NO accountability even if it's their error.

At any rate beware makemytrip, beware any price that looks cheaper than the rest, there are likely to be hidden 'costs' either in stress or in money.
