Fly to Varanasi from Jhansi, Gwalior, vicinity

Trying to do some touring of Orchha and Gwalior after visit to Agra, and then fly the rest of the way to Varanasi. Wlll have a car up to point of departure for Varanasi.

Can anyone suggest a point of departure and airlines to check?

Alternatively, can you suggest departure and arrival stations for an overnight train for this part of our trip?

Think your best option is going to be to fly Khajuraho to Varanasi - Indian Airlines (IC) and Jet (9W), both had daily flights Khaj to Varanasi last year, do not know the scheduling this year.

Car from Agra to Gwalior, worth a night stop, then down to Orchha (worth 2 nights), you can also visit the palace in Datia on the way. From Orchha it is 4 hours drive to Khajuraho where you will want a night to check out the temples before getting a flight to Varanasi.

If you are thinking about trains, Agra/Gwalior/Jhansi are all on the main North - South trunk line with plenty of day and overnight trains. The fastest and most comfortable option is the New Delhi - Bhopal Shatabdi Express, it is a daily service, you can take this train from Agra to Gwalior, then reboard it the next day from Gwalior to Jhansi and transfer by road (40 minutes) to Orchha, then best by private car from Orchha to Khajuraho.

Enjoy. Dil.

Air Deccan fly Gwalior (18:55) to Delhi (19:50), and Spice Jet, Kingfisher, Jet and Indian all fly Delhi to Varanasi, however, all the Delhi-Varanasi flights depart between 10:05 and 14:35.

Train 1107 departs Gwalior daily at 19:50, then Jhansi at 21:35 and gets to Varanasi at 10:15.

Fare from Jhansi (& Gwalior) to Varanasi.

2-tier air con = Rs 871 (973)
3-tier air con = Rs 625 (697)
Sleeper Class (not air con) = Rs 232 (258)

Both still fly this route.

Jet depart Khajuraho at 13:30, getting to Varanasi at 14:10

Indian depart Khajuraho at 14:00, getting to Varanasi at 14:40

Thank you for all this useful information!

On the basis of what we have absorbed (me and friend who is planning trip with me), I'd like to re-phrase my question:

--It now comes down to -- What are your opinions about the best way for us to get from Agra to Varanasi? as to these two possibilities?

(I don't think we want to take an overnight train - we have a young boy with us and I don't think we'll have been in India long enough for it to be more fun than stressfulness. I'd rather do it later or just with adults. I am a bad sleeper and won't be adjusted to time yet.)

1.--If nothing but time was a concern, it appears to me that the best plan is to go back to Delhi after our morning visit to the Taj and some other sightseeing (we will have stayed in Delhi for several days already) and fy from there to Varanasi. I think best plan would be to get ourselves to an airport hotel and get out on the earliest am flight.

This seems a bit dismal but has the payoff of getting us to Varanasi for an extra night, giving us at least four nights there.

2--the other kind of plan comes from my first wish, to travel toward Varanasi with stops at Gwalior and/or Orchha. From suggestions I see that the way to do this is to get to Khajuraho and fly the rest of the way. I would do this with two overnights after leaving Agra.

As to what you know about how long things take and road conditions, does this seem okay, or impossible, or possible but too speedy? To me driving for about four hours total in a day, with long stops in the course of the day, would be okay. Needing to do more than that would get things out of balance, too much driving not enough being someplace.

Meanwhile I definitely have read that at least some of the country in this part of India has only very bad and very slow roads.

so - if anyone has some patience for this, I'll really appreciate it.

I suppose youngsters are different all over the world, I think a young London boy would love an overnight train journey, they may also think that 3 days in Varanasi is a day to long.

Of course you could be right. The train journey is the third option, I'll keep them all on my list. Things are still pretty fluid (the trip is in February, we've got places to stay at the beginning in and end in Bombay, and now we're planning the rest of it).
