Fly or Train to Goa?

What are some good rates for airfare to Goa from Mumbai during Mid-November? What airlines are cheapest?

Is it cheaper to fly or take train?

Also, what are some decent hotels in Goa? I am looking at $50 US Dollars per night range.

Are there any tour packages? Where can I find rates on those?

The cheapest airline on this route is Air Deccan http://www.airdeccan.net/airdeccan/home.asp

The earlier you book the cheaper it is. The Air deccan fares are almost the same as A/C travel by train. Travelling by bus is another option although it is distinctly uncomfortable. The bus fare is between Rs 450-700.

Overnight Sleeper class trains (Konkar Railway) are much preferrable than taking a flight. Much cheaper, without sacrificing much comfort.

I keep hearing from relatives in India that the Bombay-Goa train route is not safe - that there have been quite a few derailments cause of avalanches over the last few yrs and that there's a re-eval / re-engineering of the route underway... anyone have other data / experiences? Would love to go that route!

Air Deccan will get you to and from Goa / Mumbai for 500rs if you're flexible with your dates..

Bus, train etc will however, expose you to far more interesting encounters, If time's an issue, fly, if not ... go overland !

Hey people, I just had a look at train tickets availability from goa to mumbai, say 5-6. november, and there is already a waiting list! How likely is it that without any prebooking I will be stuck in Mumbai, because all is sold out?
