Flights to Thailand

I am in South India and will be flying to Thailand in the next few weeks. Can anybody tell me whether it is worth the money to travel to Kolkata to buy a flight or should I just get one from Chennai?

Its definetly cheaper from Calcutta
I've flown to both Hong Kong and Bangkok from there and saved a lot.

As far as I remember Druk Air are the cheapest but have limited departure days. They use propeller Fokker planes which opens up a whole host of jokes ...such as what a fokker of a plane ...this is a fokker of a flight etc etc

we flew with Indian Airlines for around 6500 Rups i think

When arriving in BKK you can share a taxi or take the aircon bus for 100 Baht which willd rop you at all the main hotel locations and is hassle free
The stop is right at the taxi rank outside arrivals and you buy tickets there

You can also do the cheapo route which I like as Im Scottish hahaha

Take the train ...you walk over a walkway over the road ...its marked in arrivals
It cost 10Baht to the central station...about 20-30 minutes then outside the train station take a left round the corner ...ask tourist info where it is ...they also do great free maps
The take the number 57 bus to Banglamphu ...for 2Bhat I think
The conductor will know where you want ..(ask for Koh Sarn rd and they'll tell you when to get off

Good luck
Oh I should say ....Calcutta is an amazing city
try and stay a few days there it wont dissapoint
The salvationa rmy on Sudder street is great but book ahead

All the best

Is it possible that someone can give me more information on this subject?

I'm going to Bangkok and then to the south of india for 2 months, but i've read somewhere that the train from Kolkata to Mumbai takes about 36 hours..

Does it really saves that much?

Pretty much
If you're short of time then yeah get the plane...
If you have the time then try doing the journey in stages

There are amazing places to stop on the Calcutta Mumbai route
The trains are travelling villages on wheels so you'll really experience a unique Indian experience

However you can fly from Bangkok to Chennai and Mumbai ....So if you're strapped for time this may suit

Bryan, thanks for your reaction!

I've been to Rajasthan and i liked travelin' by train, so that's not the question

It's more that i want to go to the south without stayin' at other area's to much, maybe going to the north-east some other time.

But is it possible to tell what "pretty much" is (50-100$?)

I could be wrong here ...and hopefully if I am others can correct it
I think you're looking at an extra $100-$150 from Delhi to Bangkok so i'd imagine Mumbai is the same

I have the figure of $250 DEL - BKK ...
The train as you'll know is far cheaper
I think Beach posted about the trains and that gives an indication of prices

Also you could take the Rajdhani express ...This is twice the speed of the normal trains and has limited stops
So that could ba a compromise perhaps

I hope this helps
To get a ball park figure for prices you could perhaps try the Indian airlines website as they fly to Bangkok fro India

Good luck

Here are some fares from the websites of a couple of BKK travel agents for comparison purposes, you could probably do a little better by strolling down Kho San Rd in BKK. Fares from BKK and don't include departure tax. Thai baht currently around 40 to $1US.

STA travel: Mumbai or Bangalore o/w 9800 r/t 15000 ($245/$375)
: Calcutta o/w 6200 r/t 10500 ($155/$262)
: Delhi or Chennai o/w 9300 r/t 13200 ($232/$330)

olavi.com: o/w available but only r/t shown on web-site:
:Calcutta r/t 8500 ($212)
: Delhi r/t 12500 ($312)
:Mumbai r/t 14200 ($355)

If you will be returning to Thailand, then a round trip would be advantageous, and 'open-jawing' should be possible if you wish to go to one city and return from another (for an average of the two r/t fares)

These are discounted fares, the fares on airline web-sites will be normal, full fare rates.

Some of these fares from STA & Olavi look great, but trying to book anything from an Indian based website is much higher..

I've checked both Thai Air & Indian Airlines for singles from Kolkata to Bangkok for Feb 2005 and it's 13,819 & 12,400 INR respectively .... SINGLE !

Do you know if someone like Olavi can book the other way 'round - ie India TO Thailand ( possibly a return ) ? The talk on their website is of 'flights FROM Thailand'..

Druk will try to sell me a whole plane ! Check the 'announcement' at the bottom of their homepage !
