Flights to Leh in August
What do you think? Fly from Delhi to Leh, then road to Shrinagar, etc.
Or would it be better to travel up by road and back by plane? The trouble with that is that then we are tied by our return flight from Srinagar to the amount of time we spend. Or we could travel all the way by road, but we only have 4 weeks and would like to visit a few other places on the way back like McLeod Ganj, Dalamshala, Amritser, and possibly Lahore. How far in advance do we need to book a flight to or from Leh? |

it takes one full day to acclimatize to the altitude in leh. so if time is a factor i'd recommend flying to leh. you could road it to srinagar and if things continue as they are the road should be pretty safe. often indian airlines has special flight deals so for a small sum you could get some unlimited flying in a week or two in which case flying to srinagar from leh might be a good idea. the road to leh would be from himachal...it can take a while, the roads aren't in great shape always.

Flying to Leh? BOOK YOUR TICKETS RIGHT AWAY!!! or you can pay some underhand money to get a confirmed seat closer to date!
I would AVOID Srinagar - but it is up to you! IT is beautiful but the presence of too much military camps etc spoils everything. Some people can not handle the number of 'body' checks that takes place especially the airport. (someone was checked 12 times before he got on the plane - man, he was SHAKING when he arrivedin Leh from Srinagar). I would rather drive up to Leh via Manali and fly back Leh to Delhi. If you are a bike freak - this is a good challenge for you! |

I have been to Leh a couple of times, and Mountaingirl is quite right, the journey is best done by road from Manali and then fly out, to Delhi. Both Jet and Indian Airways fly this route. The cost last summer was $107 USD, with a 25% discount if you are under 30 years old.
