18/7/10 udaipur to mt abu
19/7/10 mt abu
20/7/10 mt abu to jodhpur
21/7/10 jodhpur to jaisalmer

23/7/10 jaisalmer
24/7/10 jaisalmer to jodhpur
25/7/10 jodhpur to varanasi FLIGHT #1
26/7/10 varanasi
27/7/10 varanasi

I think flights are not staight - they're through Delhi, for example, and connection between two legs takes too much time. If I were you, I would try to make your north part by trains and than return to Delhi and have a flight to Cochin. Something like this:

12/7/10 delhi
13/7/10 delhi - catch an overnight train to Udaipur
14/7/10-18/7/10 Udaipur-Mt Abu, move in between and by bus or taxi. From Mt Abu catch 9223 ADI JAT EXPRESS to Jodhpur (it'll arrive at 8PM, and than catch an overnight train to Jaisalmer (4810 JU JSM EXPRESS) at 11PM
19/7/10-21/7/10 Jaisalmer, than overnight train to Jodhpur
22/7/10 - 23/7/10 jodhpur, than overnight train to Agra, 2308 JU HWH SUPFAST for example
24/7/10 Agra, overnight train to Varanasi
25/7/10-27/7/10 varanasi, catch one of overnight trains to Delhi
28/7/10 have your third day in Delhi and catch an evening flight to Cochin, or have an early morning flight to Cochin the next day
29/7/10 cochi to allepy homestay
30/7/10 homestay
31/7/10 homestay/houseboat
1/8/10 alleppey houseboat to cochi
2/8/10 cochi
3/8/10 usa

This itinerary is highly dependable on tickets availability, so you have to buy tickets as early as possible. If you don't like overnight train - you could choose other trains or go by bus, there are plenty of them, but it will reduce time for sightseeng.

have a good trip!
Past the point of no return...

Thanks so much for your help. I should have mentioned in the orginal post that I actually can't change the beginning of my trip because i'm doing it with my brother and his part is set.

I think i decided that I will be too exhausted doing so many overnight trains so here is my proposed itinerary. What do you all think?

12/7/10 delhi
13/7/10 delhi
14/7/10 delhi
15/7/10 agra (overnight train to agra)
16/7/10 udaipur
17/7/10 udaipur
18/7/10 udaipur to mt abu
19/7/10 mt abu
20/7/10 mt abu to jodhpur
21/7/10 jodhpur
22/7/10 jodhpur
23/7/10 jodhpur to jaipur
24/7/10 jaipur (overnight train to varanasi)
25/7/10 varanasi
26/7/10 varanasi
27/7/10 varanasi
28/7/10 varanasi to delhi to cochi (two carriers found on cleartrip)
29/7/10 cochi to allepy homestay
30/7/10 homestay
31/7/10 homestay/houseboat
1/8/10 alleppey houseboat to cochi
2/8/10 cochi
3/8/10 usa

If you can skip Jaisalmer - your trip will be much less hectic and doable and seems OK for me. But be very careful with flight connection, as once my "one hour" flight was late at 5 hours and if I have a connection flight at that day - I would be tooo late.

yeah.. I'm a little nervous about that myself. I think the two flights have a 4 hour lay over, but it's definitely still a risk. The alternative is leaving the night before on an overnight train from varanasi to delhi, and making a delhi-cochi flight then.

Why not go from Delhi to Varanasi, then to Agra (both by overnight trains)?

Then the Rajasthan bit.

Check the times of the Delhi-Kerala flights, a bus/taxi from Jaipur to Delhi airport only takes about 4 hours.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, I have to do Delhi-Agra-Udiapur because my brother will be joining us for that first week and he wants to see delhi, agra udaipur. Once we leave udaipur we're free. I ended up buying the flight from varanasi to delhi with a 4 hour layover til a delhi-cochi flight. I might buy a varanasi-delhi overnight train for the night before as back up just in case the weather is predictably bad the night before.

Thanks everyone for your help!
