If you have a nasal spray that works , use it on the plane as well. The equalisation technique used by divers is called Valsalva maneuver , you should be able to google a good description if no diver is at hand.

after a long flight a couple years ago, i had blocked ears for a day or so after, as the pain had passed i went scuba diving shortly afterwards, it wasnt a good idea as my ears wouldnt equalise underwater it was too painful so i didnt finish the dive. a couple of days later i went to the doctor who told me i had burst an eardrum the pain was awful. a course of antibiotics and no more swimming (with my head under water...) for a week.
lately ive found that a bag of popcorn to keep munching on during the descent helps a bit. also sipping water and 'popping' my ears helps too.
The same happened to me about 10 years ago - my left ear-drum got punctured when I attempted scuba. My ears just don't equalize. Air travel was a nightmare until I discovered Nelsons Travella ((https://www.yourhealthfoodstore.co.uk/details.php/p912_nelsons_travella_for_natu ral_relief_of_travel_sickness. html,), a homeopathic medicine that is only available in the UK. I pop a pill about 1/2 hr before take-off and another pill about 1/2 hr before landing. It seems to work like magic.

I took the motion sickness pill n couldnt wake up bcos i was too drowsy..

Do you think that ear wax will aggravate ear pain.
Would it not be a good idea to clean your ears well before a plane journey??

I forgot to mention that I used to swim daily when in college and used to practice martial arts underwater.(inspired by kickboxer) and I found that my ears would hurt due the water pressure.
What I found was a co-swimmer ears never hurt and he said you will get used to it.
So then I started staying underwater longer and i got used to it.
It was a swimming 18feet depth I remember I used to lie down on the poll floor just to feel the pressure, But after a month I could not feel anything even while lying down.
I remember then I would never get any ear pain.
Especially when trains would pass through tunnels. It is not as painful as airplanes but it does disturb and you can feel your ears pop.
I could never feel that. after many years of stoping swimming I get discomfort when trains travel in tunnels and I have to hold by ears shut.
I think we can get used to it by swimming. I also excited by the homeo medicine I got ask my homeo doc.
So much for placebo effect
