Very true - IRCTC IS the Indian Railways official site.

However, the others like MakeMyTrip, Cleartrip, Yatra etc are all authorised agents of IRCTC. The link does not state about MakeMyTrip though, seems IRCTC didn't bother to update the PDF .

In addition, http://erail.in is another site, which uses INdian Railways data to show you the train running between places and availability (not always) thereon. It has a much better interface once you have worked with it couple of times. Though always take the final decision after verifying on the official site.

Please note that Indian railways provides search options without having you log on to IRCTC. The site link is below, and the good thing is you can look up all class info, which is not yet available in IRCTC.

Hi Everyone, just a warning about makemytrip.com. My friend recently purchased a round-trip ticket with them from Canada to India. She bought & paid for everything online using her credit card. Everything was going as it should - her payment was accepted & she received email confirmation with her booking details, etc. But later she was contacted by makemytrip.com, who threatened that if she didn't pay an additional 26,000Rs, they would cancel her ticket. Their justification was that the flight should not have been offered at the price it was sold at! My friend didn't pay & they canceled her ticket. They told her that when they would just reverse the charge on her credit card. That didn't happen. Instead the charge got posted to her credit card. makemytrip.com has still not refunded her money. To make it worse, my friend will now lose out on at least $75 for a ticket that she doesn't have - makemytrip.com will NOT refund her the price she paid, they will only refund her at the current exchange rate (having paid with a foreign credit card, she is now at a loss because of the fluctuating exchange rate). So please share this advisory with all your traveling friends! I know I'd rather spend a little more money with a reputable agency & actually have a plane ticket then deal with this mess!

This does not compute The credit card company should be involved, if indeed it is true. I have used MMT in the past, and for one cancellation, they offered to revers the charge, and Amex; which was involved proactively stopped payment on that particular entry.

I do not understand, MMT, once they issue a eTicket, have to honor the transaction. Now if for some reason (there are a few) they made a mistake in data entry; I would presume that MMT would eat the difference.

26,000INR sounds like a big snafu. If travelocity/vyama/orbitz/kayak all fall in the mean price for RT to India and MMT is off by 40-50%, then there should be a cause for concern.
