changing domestic flights

I am planning to take the train from Delhi to Jammu-Srinigar, and then to fly from Srinigar south to Bombay.

The Srinigar-Bombay flight routes through De- lhi.

If there is unrest in Kashmir and I want to not go, I will probably just travel around Delhi. What happens if I pick up my booked-and-paid-for-Srinigar-Bombay flight as it goes through Delhi? Anyone had any experience of doing this?

I know that the airlines'official line will be that I have to pay for changes but has anyone had any luck with claiming, "I don't want to die in a war zone, please don't make me risk it" etc?

Thanks very much all!
