Change from International to Domestic in 3 hours in Delhi

We are a group arriving in Delhi 03:10 (scheduled) in the morning, and we will have to catch a plane to Leh from the Domestic airport the same morning 6:30.

1. Is this enough time for changing flights, considering we have to change terminal?

2. How often is flight to and from Leh cancelled in the summer period?

3. Is it possible to book flights out of Leh when you are there (august) or is it necessary to book them beforehand?

Thank you very much for your answers, they are much appreciated!

Cheers,

Tobias from Denmark!

It will be stressful for you. For your answers:

1. Not enough. You should better have some more gap. Lagguage etc can take time.

2. Not very often.

3. Yah is possible.

Is 3 hours and 20 minutes really not enough for the transfer? Does any other fellow IndiaMiker have a opinion on this? We are on a quite tight schedule.. Would you take the chance?

I have never done it, but do not see it as being too tight. Of course, delays can make it tight, but I think it ought to be OK. Provided your plane is roughly on time (and at 3:10 AM, there might not be too much air-traffic delay), you ought to be fine. Take a taxicab between terminals.

The big rub is inbound flight delays. Delhi is well known for that. However, given this is summer not winter, you may be able to do it..

We just decided to bring all our stuff in the hand luggage - so, we want have to wait for luggage. Dont you think that will speed up the process quite a lot?

It is quite doable. What you need to do, though, is create a ruckus from the start to let you disembark early. You will still need to push through immigration (beg/plead with the airline etc).

The shuttle bus would have like a 20-30 min frequency - you should make it just in time, but it CAN just as well be late. It is tight.

And with night landings on the 10/28 old runway - you will be parked at the intl terminal before you know it. 3am arrival is pretty much the fag end of the arrival wave.
BUT you may have queues in immigration etc (only because of the heightened flu checks/general possibility)

Hi Tobias,

First of all welcome to India !! You have decided to go to one of the most exotic and remote locations in India, The Ladakh region. We will come back to that later

The answers to your questions are

1. This is not enough time to change flights. Currently there are extra measures in place at New Delhi internatioal airport. All incoming flights (especially from Europe) are screened for swine flu.

You will have to fill out a form on arrival describing your medical history of the past few days. The authorities may ask you extra questions.

Moreover you will be landing at 3:10 in the morning which I would say is rush hour at New Delhi international.

2. The flight to Leh and back to New Delhi is cancelled only on very very rare occasions in the summer months, so nothing to worry here.

3. It is possible to book flights out of Leh, but I would strongly suggest you book before hand. Buy a return ticket from Delhi to Leh. A return ticket will be cheaper plus you will have a confirmed seat on the flight back to Delhi.

Summer months are packed periods for Leh - New Delhi flights and in case you dont get a flight ticket out of Leh, the only way to come out of there is by road, on the famed Leh- Manali highway.

In case you have any more questions feel free to ask. I did a week trip to Leh, last year and went by plane.

The domestic terminal is about 3-4 kms away from the International Terminal and shouldn't take more than 15 minutes by road after you are out of the terminal. The roads will be deseted at 3 am besides the roads are also part of an expressway and there are no traffic signals on the route. Also , most of the international arrivals peak around midnight to 2 am, so presumably 3 am should be comparatively less crowded and immigration should be a breeze. If you are not carrying a cold , I don't foresee swine flu screening taking too much time.

The Domestic deaparture terminal is a spanking new buiding recently opened and you might enjoy spending some time there before your flight. Under normal circumstances you will have a couple of hours to while away there.

Also, I believe carrying hand baggage to and fro flights to Kashmir is prohibited ( at least it was till last year). All bagges must be checked-in.Be prepared likewise.

Consider a cab instead of waiting for the shuttle if it looks tight..

Is there an internal road connecting the two terminals or do you have to come via National Highway 8 ?

I am afraid, you can catch the Leh flight in given span. Think all the reason discussed above, and think if only one situation occure ?
It will be better, if you reschedule your Leh flight. why to take chance....?

Hi

Last year I went from Sydney to Delhi. Arrival time was meant to be about midnight but we arrived at about 6.00am.

Any serious delay is likely on the incoming flight, and not because of delays in commuting from the Int terminal to Domestic.

However I would, as a precaution, reschedule the Leh flight (just in case).
