Exclamation Carbon neutral flying

Dear IMers,

www.greenseat.nl will charge us for the two of us for a return flight Brussels (Belgium) <-> Istanbul (Turkey) <-> Delhi (India)
E47.57 for CO2 alone (148 trees for 2.96 ton CO2), and
E93.34 for all gases (296 trees for 5.92 ton various).

Which organisation is most reliable and suitable to arrange CO2 / Carbon / Environment Neutral flying? Which organisation do _you_ recommend? Why?

Thanks!
Ben

I'll bite as well ... I guess it is buying trees to absorb the CO2 generated by your flight. Here in Oz It costs us $2000 AUD to fly to india in Dec/Jan. I think I might save the money and plant some shrubs in my garden or allow the algae to grow in the pond. Algal carbon sinks are much more effective than trees.

No mate just be proactive.. when you feel the need to pass wind, stick a pvc pipe up your arse, relieve yourself and when you have collected enough gas use it to cook up a cracking vegan curry for your mates.

I am glad I could be of assistance. I am not unaware that you may not feel comfortable in sticking a pipe up your arse. Don't worry. Here at Guilt Co we have professional arse pipe farters ready to compensate for your transgressions. Please send me $100 euros and I will send you a photo of a similar sized contained emission.

Please note that the photo may not be a singular emission. Here at Guilt Co we reserve the right to build up several emissions and release them in to containment at the same time.

Exclamation

Indeed, you compensate the exhaustion of gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect and other effects detrimental to both the environment and our own health.
You simply pay an organisation to plant trees to do that for you.

To be honest I firmly believe it is not only a nice gesture or food for thought. It is the traveller's moral obligation.

People that complain about it being too expensive: it is only a few percent of the flight costs and even only a smaller percentage of all that you are about to spend during your whole holiday.

From Adelaide to Delhi (and back) would cost you some E35 (AUS$59) for CO2 and E67 (AUS$ 112) for all gases (per passenger).

You are more than welcome, Vistet!! Glad to see someone feeling personally responsible. I have this profound fear that humanity is doomed to a "Tragedy of the [Environmental] Commons" (so well-known in Socio-Psychology). I hope we can curb it

An appealing example of Tragedy of the Commons for us North-Western Europeans is the case of cod in the Northsea: once very common, now nearly extinct!

You mean that aircraft may be on the verge of extinction?

No, seriously: I do take this seriously.

<a few minutes later>

Nice site. Good idea. Shame major airlines don;toffer it as a payment option. But I guess they wouldn't.

Maybe if they did it wouldn't be such a good idea, but might just cause the attitude "I'm paying for my polution, so why shouldn't I do it?"

Not much help but,
My sister found a great company, don't remember the name, will find out. But they wont plant the trees in any country signed upto the Kioto (sp?) agreement, as the goverment could then claim, what you are doing towards there comitment to the agreement, thought that was really interesting. They were also only saying soming like £30 for her flight to san fan and back!

posted here before on the world environment day thread about this website carbon fund. take a look.

my thing with all this organizations is how much goes into their overheads are compared to the amount that actually goes into what it is intended for...i dont want to pay for colorful brochures and pretty offices..

Nick, technically speaking you are not polluting, so there is no objection to flying then!!

GreenChutney, they actually charge E1.50 administration costs. But, fair is fair, my post was indeed about which organisation we should pick!

Brigit, please do find the URL Mind you that I am not really interested in the cheapest, but rather in the organisation that is most trustworthy and of course does what I want it to do: compensate the pollution I cause!
