Biman Air
I am thinking of flying Biman from Bangkok to Delhi next month. There will be one night stop in Dhaka because Delhi flight only departs the next morning.
So, does Biman provide hotel accomodation in this scenario and if so, what hotel do they provide? is it far from town? And since my luggage have to stop one night at Zia Airport, how likely will it get tampered with? things stolen? lugagge does not arrive in Delhi the following day , etc. Any other bad experiences? And can I get my luggage during transit time ? and re-check in it later just before the flight to Delhi? Is it worth the low cost? Thanks a lot. |

check with airline
i doubt there are many people who have gone the route you are going, so i think you will be better checking with the airline.
below is the link to their website Biman air is it worth it? a free opportunity to see a new city, to me it would be worth it, however, i would have tried for 3 or 4 days though. even if the airline will not pay for a hotel, it should only cost you about US$10 a night for an OK place. i have heard Dhaka is a good city to explore, and cheaper than Bombay or Delhi. |

I once flew from Kuala Lumpur to dehli with a stop in Dakkha for
12 hours,it wasn t neither possible to have a longer stopover nor to get my luggage,I had to wait in the lobby(very dirty that time), a bangladeshi on his way to London was puking all the time,so the floor was full of his excrements, but nobody did care!!! the officers kept our passports, some people wanted to visit Dakkha for a couple of hours, but that was impossible,no chance to get my passport back. All shops were closed in the nightime in the airport! But you could try to get a direct flight from bangkok to dehli! Last year I flew with Air India which was 6900 Baht only. Also there are very cheap flights to Kolkatta from Bangkok... have a good flight! |

Dhaka Airport update
Two things...
Biman is a state airline. So service does suck. Planes are late, food is marginal. That being said, I have generally found Biman's staff to be a friendly lot -- IF dealt with courteously. The planes are also reasonably clean and comfortable. Well -- we're not talking S'pore airlines here but you get the idea. On the other hand.... what the previous poster said about Dhaka being a stopover is generally true except the cleanliness part. Puking? It could happen but I don't think this is routine for every traveller. Please..... The airport has made major -- I mean _major_ strides in the last couple of years to upgrade facilities. There are comfortable departure lounges with Jetways and departure and arrival lounges are separate now (The terminal has doubled in size effectively). It compares very favorably with the rest of the subcontinent's airports and may actually be a little more modern in essence. Dhaka is only described as a backwater by people who haven't visited it. For those interested in what the city looks like, look here, Largest mall in South Asia, http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=140813 National Assembly, http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=141440 Dhaka Landmarks, http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=143280 Dhaka Skyline, http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=138718 If one follows the last thread, it will be clear that Dhaka's frenzied pace of developement can be matched only by Mumbai in the subcontinent. |

I flew with them Bangkok to Calcutta five years ago with a stop-over in Dhaka. They put us in a very basic hotel and you couldn't visit the city. It was middle of the night so it didn't really matter.
Biman was ok. Very impressed with the fact that they managed to serve a full mean during the 30 min Dhaka - Calcutta flight! Dhaka airport was bit chaotic - resembled more an average Indian railway station than an international airport. Very cool 60's style interior tho! |
