Aug 10 Flights Disruption; Terrorists thwarted
Have you been affected? Are you do to fly within the next few days?
Any updates on the situation? Any reactions?

Seems to be okish, I'm flying out tonight from heathrow, they are only saying an hour and a half delay. we will see, aparently can't take any hand luggage thought, just a wallet and travel docs, in a clear bag. I might die without a book.

Short-haul & domestic flights in and out of Heathrow have been cancelled. Most other airports are still functioning albeit with delays. Hand-baggage isn't allowed - just essential items in a clear bag. liquids aren't allowed.
Conspiracists are suggesting this is all a smoke-screen to distract from the middle east crisis. I don't know. The world is such a mess! |

I might die without a book. That was my first thought.
I just hope that they are allwoing the same total hold plus carry-on allowance. Let's face: most of that carry-on stuff we don't need in the flight, it is just there because we're up to the limit on what's booked in (at least for non-light travellers like me). An air security "correspondent" on TV was saying this restriction is over the top. He also said that the "liquid explosives" that are causing the worry this time have been around for quite a while and nothing has been done to implement detecting them. What worries me above all is that the "UK Police are confident" that they have foiled a massive terrorist attack. They were confident that they were raiding a bomb factory when they shot an innocent man in his London home just a few weeks ago... I'm sure that the conspiracy theorists will have a hayday; and I do wonder, even if the threat is deadly real, how much of the action is neccessary or effective and how much is publicity. Of course, I wish we lived in a world where none of this happened and we never had to ask these questions. Brigit: have a good flight . I'm sure the worst thing on board will be the food! |

Doesn't make sense to me at all. Why should you not be allowed hand baggage if you can take checked in baggage? Both can be xrayed the same way to check for any illegal items or explosive materials that affect the safety of those travelling on board the aircraft.

And a bomb in the hold is surely just as dangerous...

so what if you don't allow someone to bring shampoo or whatever in their carryon bag -- my toiletries are in my checked luggage! so someone can't sneak something onboard THAT way?!?

If the rich world is now paralyzed by a tube of toothpaste, we are all really screwed (first it was tweezers). People in Mumbai can board commuter trains without passing through a gauntlet of magnetic, optical, and psychological screeners, personal patdowns, and the removal of footware. They can still carry packs and briefcases. Life moves on. It's just too bad that the US and the UK have thrown in the towel. The terrorists have won.
If air travel represents an unacceptable risk to the free world, ban air travel. |

It's just ridiculous. At some point we will elect a government of people who have not lost their minds. I should not have to cross a pseudo-military checkpoint just to get on an airplane, and items I can purchase at RiteAid should be perfectly legal at 35,000 feet. Collectively, why are we such ninnies?
