I suspect that it is not their policy at all, but that of their bankers or the agents that deal with the cards.

If these guys say don't accept, there is little that the airlines can do about it.

They must be aware that it is a money-loosing policy, even if foreign tourists only constitute a tiny percentage of their custom.

I hope Nick has made it a bit clear..why would they want to loose out on foreign customer, that is when they charge the same fare from anyone and everyone..

And they are willing to accept your card on their counter...

Its just a way to avoid the rising number of Credit Card frauds..and I guess they might not start accepting the card, till some good solution shapes up..

Probably a combination of high credit card fees and lack of demand.

I flew domestic Delhi-Lucknow a couple of weeks ago and saw almost no foreigners [1] at either airport. I was definitely the only foreigner on the flight either way (I think my wife booked through a travel agent and paid cash rupees but we still travelled by e-ticket).

[1] saw one filthy hippy at DEL and also a non-filthy westerner wearing khadi garb and Crocs (there really should be a death penalty for that sort of fashion).

If it was fees then they would have not accepted the card over the counter as well..

I feel Nick is right in his assessment...

Not really. A credit card transaction at the airline counter means the card is swiped and the signature of the card holder is verified. This is considered a card-present transaction.

When a person books a ticket either online or by telephone it is considered a card absent transaction. Transactions which fall in this category carry a higher risk of fraud and as a result a bigger surcharge is levied.

Mod Note

Merged this with the Spice Jet Reply thread as they are both essentially the same conversation.

SpiceJet and credit cards

Hi
I was looking for a non stop flight from Kochi to Delhi on 21 November and I found one on SpiceJet for the time I wanted...I followed the prompts all the way to the point where I have to pay and it gave me the option of using credit card (and I am in the USA right now.)...but stopped there.

I'd like to know if SpiceJet is a reasonably dependable airline as far as schedules are concerned before I book my flight...of cousre, at that time I'd find out if they take my Mastercard.
Thanks,
Richard

Spicejet is a dependable airline. They will not accept your mastercard but will accept AMEX.

I am glad to hear that Spice Jet is dependable, cause i have 3 flights booked with them for Sept/Oct...Their fares are reasonable, and they took my AMEX (after several attempts).

I also used Jet Airways for a flight and they took my Visa.

oh, good heavens, it's not the fault of resident indians! let's not make it an "us v. them" issue. in-country residents around the globe often have advantages that others don't, and no one has an inalienable right to make credit-card travel reservations. have you tried a travel agent?
