Continental's nonstop direct Newark (EWR) to New Delhi starts Nov. 1, 2005 and according to their website should take about 14 hours. 15 hrs. return. I think it's one of the new Over-the-Pole flights. It's listed at $1,390. That's kind of high but it really is a big time saver and seems to leave and arrive at more reasonable times than the other airlines that make a stop. I've always arrived sometime between 2 am and 5 am (on British Airways, Lufthansa, Air India) which actually had some advantage--no traffic! I've also flown from Delhi to London on Aeroflot and that was horrible--and a long story which I won't bore you with!

Cant believe the changes now: 20 years ago..

I cant believe how many options I have now if I want to fly non stop to India. I guess its unbelievable for me because it goes back to my childhood, when I used to visit India over summer vacations in the 80s. Traveling to India back then was such an ordeal, shopping, buying gifts for relatives, finding the biggest industrial strength suitcases, packing for weeks, heading to JFK (nearly 2 hours away from parents house in NJ) since it was the only airport that had Air India flights. Air India was one of the ONLY options for us. And the flight operated only once or twice a week, and you always knew which day that was because of all the colorful sarees at check in and security.

The flight itself was ardous and never ending. We would stop in London and get out stretch our legs, walk around, and wonder why all the airport cleaners were Indian? (unlike in the US) and my mom usually felt bad for them giving them a gift or something, and then get back on the flight for another 10 hours to India. Always flew into Delhi in the middle of the night with hundreds of relatives waiting for passengers (nowadays it seems there are less relatives waiting and more drivers...hmmm. guess a returning NRI is hardly a big deal anymore for families in India)...Then since we are from Hyderabad, we had to take a train down...ughhh..exhaustion..but as a little kid I remember loving every minute of it...my mom on the other hand was just pooped. And then finally after arriving in my grandmas house in Hyderabad...fun fun fun...for the summer...Hehe..

Wow..things really have changed..its good though.

claurianta nailed it. The only non-stops are from Toronto and (soon) Newark. And "direct" is distinct from "non-stop", although FAR TOO FEW people understand the distinction, in my opinion.

The straightest (and therefore shortest) line between North America and India goes over the Arctic. Direct flights that stop in London, Paris or Frankfurt are straying only a short distance from the shortest route. Anyone flying from North America to India via Asia (Hong Kong, Singapore, etc) is going out of their way. Look at a globe if you want to see for yourself.

I like your reminder of 80's travel to India Docgirl. My favorite flight was on Air India from JFK in NY because so many of the passengers were Indian and they had the biggest luggage I've ever seen in my life!!! And huge boxes of appliances. Maybe you and your family were in line with us I just loved that the NRI's made it feel like I was getting to India 24 hours earlier. And the plane food was also great (at least I remember it being excellent).

I guess it's good that it's faster to get there but I think the jet lag might be worse....or maybe it doesn't matter. The only time I didn't have awful jet lag was my first trip in 1975 when I went from London to Delhi by bus--fantastic 36 days and no jet lag Sometimes I wonder if I could do that overland trip again. I don't even know if American's can do it anymore (because of Iran). Anyway, that's for another thread!

Hey Camelgirl,

Yea plane food back then was really good. Air India food is alright even today (mostly done by Taj catering when it flies out of India), but back then it was veryyyy good. Few veggie options and few meat options, all in economy. Goodness, now airplane food is just yeck.

Hehe yea maybe my family and I were in line with you. That would've been cool

You went from London to Delhi by BUS??? 36 days! Wow!..Camelgirl you must write about your experience. That would be something I would love to read!! No idea about Iran though..that would be a shame if you couldnt experience that again if you wanted to...anyways thanks!

Ciao!

Good airline. Their 777's are f'n great.

You ignored the one airline that actually does a non stop flight: Air Canada. YYZ-DEL. And you can get to yyz from lax, sfo, ord, ewr, jfk, atl, mia, iah, den, pretty much any major centre. The funny thing about AC's loads is that they always flight a full plane TO India, but coming out, they have problems acheiving anything near a 66 percent load.

I guess Canadians are like most of us on this forum - want to go to India, then don't want to leave!

Toronto to Delhi non stop is no more:

at least CO will fill the void.
