While trying to book tickets online through the Airsahara website,a message that online booking is for Indian nationals residing in India is displayed. However the price charged seems to be the same for both Indians and for those of other nationalities.I did a quick comparision of the price quoted on the airline site and that listed in a third party travel site like makemytrip.com(on searching with 'I am a Resident of India' box unchecked)

Looks like I got it wrong.I must have searched with the option for Indian nationals enabled. The difference is considerable indeed between the Rs and $ rates.Isn't there any alternative to the Airsahara flights?

Sahara is the only direct flight to Mumbai, I believe. We'll probably go with Spicejet to Delhi and fly south the following day, either way a night in Delhi or a night in Mumbai, as none of the flights connect in time with Trivandrum. Thanks for replying.

I was caught traveling Sahara on the Rupee fare, Kolkata to Delhi. I was forced to pay $210 extra even though my wife (with whom I was travelling with) is Bengali and born in Calcutta.

I now avoid Sahara, Jet and Indian, who still discriminate in this way. Thanks to the new carriers, Kingfisher, Air Deccan and
SpiceJet, I believe that this will soon change...............

But you're...not...a Bengali born in Calcutta...right?

Good, that leaves more seats for the real Indians, not the descendants of the former colonizers who think they're entitled to the same rate of an Indian. I'm sure they're missing your business.

So please tell me mr smart*rse phobal, who is a 'real Indian' (citizen, resident, NRI, PIO)?

I've spent many years in travelling in India, which BTW is a country I love, and I have not yet come across anyone who considers me to be to be remotely connected in any way with colonial rule, any more than I or you would be in Canada. And how would you know where I am descended from anyway?

The dollar/rupee fare business mildly irritates me as many others, mainly because of the crude principles involved and the way the airlines and other institutions have cashed in on it. I put up with it, and where possible avoid it. As for them missing my business, you only have to look at the success of the new carriers and the ills of the old.

So you're not actually an Indian, but tried to travel on an Indian fare on the basis of having a Indian wife...

In case you haven't noticed yet, airlines and 'other institutions' exist to make a profit, not act out of the goodness of their heart. It exists because the cost of the exact same basket of goods in India is around 80% less than in the UK. So common sense says you charge someone from UK 80% more. It's common sense economics. But of course, almost everyone here is a socialist so of course anything capitalist is 'profiteering', 'cruel', oh and "crude".

Oh, and all the other Indian LCC's still price-discriminate, in case you haven't noticed, albiet not based on what your nation's GDP per capita is.
