Arriving at Indira Gandhi international airport at 8:30 at night, the first thing that struck me, while waiting in the immigration lines, were flashing red neon signs asking passengers not to bribe the customs and immigration officials. After I cleared immigration, the outside air was with thick with diesel and petrol fumes. A second not so familiar odor, adding to the already smoky atmosphere, was the smell of burning of cow dung patties. Dung is mixed with straw, made into Frisbee sized discs and dried. For most of India’s poor this is their only cooking option. The smog is so thick and smoky that headlights from cars pierced through it like searchlights during London’s blitz.
I had arranged for a cab to me pick up. Thank goodness! As I left the terminal and walked to the taxi pick-up point, a pushing, jostling group of Indian men reached their brown arms out behind a railing, and shouted at me and the other passengers, “Official taxi! Low price!” “Your hotel sent me! Please come.” “Sir! Sir! Special deal just for you.” I was prepared for this as I had researched what to expect on my arrival in Delhi but it was still somewhat disconcerting. In the host of flailing limbs a young man was holding a piece of cardboard with my name scrawled on it, saving me from the hordes of con men.

Question Int'l-->Domestic transfer time

How much time should I give myself between landing in DEL (from an international flight) and transferring to catch a domestic flight?
I would appreciate a general rule of thumb.

(I'm landing at 4:45 pm on Dec. 31st, trying to book a flight to Ahmedabad that night... it's gonna be tough, I know)

From your post I have to assume the origin of the flight is in the US ? Then only airline you could arrive at that hour is AirIndia

Here are some numbers in terms of timings, assuming that this flight on time

From landing to the jetways: 18-24 minutes
From Parking to 1st Pax out: 3-5 minutes

Hence, the first 1st Class/Biz passenger to come out of the plane would be about 21-29 minutes after landing. If you have a seat in the back of the 777; add about 8-10 minutes or more.

You are looking at 1730PM even before you reach the H1N1 screening line.

Optimistically (if you have more than a carryon luggage) the flight choice is Kingfisher Red at 21:15. There is an Indian flight at 18:45, which in my estimate is left as an excercise for a VFF.

It is better to buy ticket on single PNR and a connecting flight which is atbout 2.30 hrs that way if you miss second leg due to delay in incoming flight you can request seat in the next available flight.

I am arriving from Paris at 07:50 and planning to catch a fligth to Goa Dabolim at 10:05. Is that too short to be safe? I've read that it takes 20 min between the two terminals, but does it take long to go through the customs and get our luggage.

Thank you

Hi, we will arrive in Delhi at 2:30 am from Canada and need to catch a flight to Mumbai at 4:00. Any advice on whether this will be enough time to make it to the domestic terminal? We have the option of switching to a 6:00am flight, but I don't want to waste 2hrs in the airport if not necessary...any advice is greatly appreciated!

Look at post #140: It gives you the timings from landing to getting out of customs. About 35-35 minutes. Then there is the matter of taking the shuttle to the domestic airport.

It shoud be enough but also difficult. It depends when you will fly to India. During winter, many flights are delayed due to "brouillard" (smog ?).
