Airlines charging for backpacks with straps?
Boy that titles confusing....Hi I've been shopping all over for a backpack and somone told me that if need to check it in, as in not a carry-on (will i need to check in a 60L?) that if the backpack has straps hanging off they charge you 100 dollars? I'm flying korean, ive never had this problem in the past. Can someone enlighten me on this subject.
They told me the 100 dollars is to put in into a big box or something. |

We just did a few flights with Alitalia and there was no problem with them accepting our backpacks.
I know that sometimes loose straps can get caught up in the machinery so we try to tie these up before we check in. Last time we were in Delhi I think they had a machine which put a plastic bag around your pack but it wasn't compulsory to have this done. You can buy bags to put your pack in if you're concerned about handling damage. A hundred dollars to bag or box up a pack sounds like a total rip-off to me - it could be just another urban myth! Have you checked directly with the airline?

Carry on luggage is very restricted as to size and shape: I've had a sausauge bag rejected, despite my insisting that it was full of soft things and would squeeze in any locker corner.

I flew Korean Airlines and there were no problems with the backpack with straps. I think they stuck it in a big clear plastic bag, but there was no extra charge.

Hi,
when I have flown I have had no probs.... My backpack has a cover that goes over the straps that zips up and stops the straps from geting caught etc. Its great as it can be locked aswell. May be u should look for a back pack that does that.... |

no problems
when I've flown Air France, at check-in they give me a special plastic bag to put my backpack in, then they tape it up securely so that hanging straps are not a problem.
