Airline that cares!

I thought I’d share with you our little bit of luck with the airline we were flying home with. There’s so much negative stuff happening with the airlines at the moment what with price hikes and redundancies, it’s good to see that some airlines actually value their flying customers!!
We were waiting in the departure lounge at Delhi airport for our flight to Amsterdam viaVienna.
My wife was suffering from a infected leg courtesy of those lovely beasties sand flies. So we had decided in advance to try for an aisle seat or even better one near the emergency door which gives you a little more leg room.
I approached the first Austrian Airlines guy I seen and asked if he could help out.
“I have an even better solution for you he said, we are over booked tonight and we’re looking for volunteers to drop out and fly tomorrow at the same time. In return for which we will put you up at the 5star Radisson hotel and give you a voucher for 450 euros for your next flight with us or 300euros cash each!!??
Needless to say he sold the package and our last night in Delhi was just dandy, and it gave my wife’s leg time heal. Has anyone had a similar experience on their travels to India or any other lucky stories to tell!!
Oh and Austrian Airlines good on ya!!

Ah - Austrian Airlines. Their copyline is: "like a smile in the sky." They are pretty cheap, but I don't like them very much as they sent my rucsac to Athens instead of Delhi at the start of my 2000 trip. Took five days' wait to get it to Delhi once they found it.

I did quite well with Thai International a few years ago. I was already checked in at Kathmandu when the plane from Bangkok landed and suffered a cracked windscreen from bird strike.

We were given lunch, then put up for a day at the 5***** Yak-and-Yeti Hotel in the city. There really wasn't enough time to enjoy all the faciliites at this place, although I did luxuriate in three hot baths that day - a change from the icy bucket showers I'd been having on the Everest trail!

I flew with Korean Air enough times to get 2 free bus. class tickets to Mumbai, but the only unexpected bonus was an upgrade from economy to first class on the vancouver-seoul leg of a flight when my seat (on a full plane) was coveted so badly (in order that a guy's wife and kid could sit together) that he gave up a comp 1st class seat to make it work. At first, they wanted me to give up my non-smoking window seat for a middle smoking one and I declined -- the next offer was one I couldn't refuse. I've heard of the voluntary bump benefits, but I always check in a couple of hours early to make sure I get a good seat, so am already in the departure lounge when the 'sweeteners' are dangled.

Korean's milage program has been 'gutted', and now that I've used up all my miles, I cheerfully pay an extra $100 or so to fly Singapore Air. A first-rate airline really makes a difference on a super-long flight.
