Airfare increases - Historical Data ?

How often do airfares increase in India for popular domestic sector ? Weekly ? monthly ?

Do folks who are domestic FF, buy or reserve months in advance ? Just curious.

There is no set rule. And rather an increase in the Airfares, the fixed charges have been going up, Airport Congestion charge, Fuel Surcharge etc.

2-3 years ago the total overhead cost was around Rs.200, so if you got a cheap airfare, if was possible to fly below Rs.1000. Even last year the surcharges were close to Rs.1000 and we still were able to get tickets for around Rs.1500, however as of now the surcharge is touching Rs.3500.

Delhi-Mumbai used to be cheapest sector, because its the busiest sector in country. But today its almost impossible to get a ticket for less than Rs.4000 one side.

The passenger load has fallen drastically. All budget airlines are in the process of shuting off service to unprofitable sectors. The lean season has added to their woes.
The confidence vote to be held in Delhi tomorrow has helped fill seats in the Delhi bound flights.

To the OP, if 'taxes' (a major component of the airfare- all of which are not really taxes, just marketing feel good jargon) go up, one has to normally pay the difference regardless of booking. With the surcharges going up along with fuel costs, there is no escape regardless of when you book. Airlines claim that the 'fare' component is 500 or 1000 rupees anyway, depending on time of booking, or sometimes even lower. That 500 or so is all one is negotiating by booking well in advance.

Airlines are like those dotcom companies which collapsed in the last bust... the game is marketshare (like it was eyeballs), not profitability

And like the dotcoms, many airlines just want to be bought. Thats the exit strategy, profitability or not.

Meanwhile, in these hard times, many are compromising safety. Lousier air quality and pressure control, as well as higher ROD (rates of decent) are just two commonly used tricks to save fuel at the cost of passenger comfort/safety and the environment.

The proliferation in doemstic airlines is far too recent to talk about a history of price rises. It is not so long since there was a choice of two airlines; one which the government owned, and one which it didn't.

I think the Captain is right: this market is a sort of artificial bubble. Mind you, I used to wonder at the dotcoms, or at least those that actually traded successfully: how could they not succeed? They lacked the large overhead of retail outlets that their off-line competitors had to pay, they had large turnovers, and yet still managed to fail!

Airlines cannot avoid the huge physical expenses associated with planes (even if leased), high salaries of air crew and fuel oil.

Is the 'fly for £5' thing still going on in Europe? A neighbour of mine in London used to fly to Italy regularly for less than a decent-length train journey within UK would have cost.

Agreed. The business model of these airlines is not sustainable in the long run.

Thats my aim.

1. Move to the hills
2. Buy horse and gun
3. Get new wife, since this one won't come along

PS: Ontopic on airfares, shocked to see Hyderabad/Goa around 11000 one way, beginning August

Hmm, its a long days drive, but done before. 750km.

Excellent plans cap'n , maybe we can share some information on horses later on..or even mules for that matter.

I am by default extending my "driving circle" as well to avoid some of these costs... i can currently do about 700 - 800 Km's daily without it being too much of a pain
