Air India Tickets-Cancelled and Not knowing about it!!

Hi,

I am in a very strange situation. My parents had come down to visit us in the US and are planning to go back in June-07. They purchased their tickets for Air India(AI) through a local agency in Kerala, India(they have used this agent 3 times in the past without any problems). They made the full payment and received the tickets. So they came to the US in January and couple of days back, they called the AI office in New York(I think)to confirm the tickets. They were shocked beyond their wits when they heard that their ticket was cancelled! The AI folks were of no help and told us to contact our travel agent. So we called up our travel agent to find out what happened. He is still looking at it to determine what happened.

So my question is-Is this normal?? How can tickets get cancelled and not being informed also. Do I have any recourse for this?? Is there anywhere I can complain about this?? More importantly, how do we get the tickets back confirmed?

Thanks.

Really interested to know what explanation the travel agent gives for the cancellation.

I've also had this with Ai, turned out they cancelled because the flight was rescheduled. I got no help on the phone to sort it out but AI had the problem fixed in a half hour when we visited their offices in Delhi!!

If you have physical tickets that should be proof enough that you were booked on the flight

OK but canceled by whom!! They have to provide an answer to that at least because canceled suggests you did have a valid ticket so why did they cancel it without permission, and what are they prepared to do about it.

When you get them on the phone next time these are the question I would put to them!!
Are AI in IATA, if so I would advise them that the next step would be to consult them on the problem. Sounds to me like AI have screwed up and are trying to cover their track!

Is it the flight or the tickets that were canceled? Flights are canceled all the time for thousands of reasons, and the airline is supposed to provide you an alternative.

When I asked them this question, they essentially said to contact the travel agent. And the travel agent is in India and my parents in the US, so things are not moving on that front either.

That's an odd problem, but it does sound as if the travel agent is to blame, for whatever reason. As I'm sure you know, the Indian solution to this problem is to have one of your relatives in India take care of it for you. Do you have someone in India who can do this?

The flight isn't until June so it couldn't be that the flight was cancelled.

And they have alot of time to rectify the problem hopefully.

Maybe they paid with a card that was eventually denied or expired. Or the agent is a crook.

An airline will not cancel tickets arbitrarily, even if the flight is rescheduled, the same tickets normally apply.

I wonder if there is some dispute between the airlines and the travel agent (non payment or dues?), whom I am a little sceptical about here, even though he has been used a few times...

But the airlines should be able to tell you who cancelled. Fact is, if the ticket holders are sitting in the US after flying one way there, and saying they haven't cancelled, then AI must be able to say who did actually cancel. There must be records.

Threaten to file a complaint with the FAA and watch AI staff spring into action, the FAA has the authority to fine them. Airlines must comply with FAA regulations while operastiing the US.

I would confirm that the travel agent has not cancelled the tickets before threatening action. The OP did say he was 'finding out'

Say a lot. I think ill wait till the OP find's out what the travel agent has to say before explaining between the lines .

Hint :- As all the details are on the online computer both the agent and AI can see instantly who canceled the ticket ,when and what reason.
