Air India announces budget flights

Heard on the news this morning that Air India is developing a budget airline offshoot which will offer cheap flights from several Indian cities to destinations in the Middle East and South East Asia from April 2005.... yay!

thy've got a looooong way to go if they are going to try to challenge other Asian air carriers. Unless the fares are significantly cheaper, their service can't compare.

Yeah, but I don't think any of the existing budget airlines in this area are doing flights to India though.

For those of you coming to this part of the world... check out www.airasia.com for some really cheap flights, e.g. one way Bangkok-Kuala Lumpur or Singapore for less than 1000baht (US$25 or GBP15!!) or Bangkok to Kota Kinabalu on Borneo for 1900baht. The further in advance you book the cheaper it is... when I booked a flight to Chiang Mai for last weeke the first time I logged in it was only 500baht but a week later when I decided to book it was 1000baht.

On a tangential note, the visit india fares are increasing for both Jet Airways and Indian Airways post July 1st. If you plan to visit India this fall and know you will be using one of these passes best to buy it ahead of time in your local country.

Jet Airways is going up to $650.00 plus taxes for the two week trip and Indian Airlines is going up to $600 plus taxes.

Part of this is a request from the NRI communities, especially in the Arab emirates and Singapore, to offer cheap flights home for poor laborers. It's been a few years in the making. Before the election, the BJP had been, admirably, trying to service the ex-pat workforce more effectively. Even oil rig workers in Dubai send a lot of money home. So, alas, IndiaMikers, we are not the target audience . . .
