IIRC, you need to check in for the international flight three hours before departure?
So you have to be there at 8.45. The traffic will be quite heavy at that time. You'd need to allow an hour or more from central Chennai, departing between 7pm and 7.45pm. If you get out of the airport by 3.00, that still gives you four hours. That's time enough to eg visit Mylapore, see the temple, wander around the market, have a snack. I'm always very conservative about time needed to get to airports, although stuff like on-line checkin can, airline permitting, reduce that huge hunk of wasted time before takeoff.

It is a lot further from the airport, though, which is why I suggested somewhere further South --- apart from my usual bias towards Mylapore

You will have many opportunities to experience these treatments at all kinds of levels.
Suggest you start looking around once you arrive here. There are a number of threads by people moving to Chennai: I'm sure you'll find useful information on other stuff on the board too. Welcome to Indiamike! : |
