Thumbs up Yamuna birds need support

Did you know that New Delhi ranks second only to Nairobi (Kenya) in terms of bird variety that can been seen in any capital city in the world! 500 species have been recorded from Delhi state altogether, though a more contemporary score would be a little over 400, about a third of all species recorded in the country.

Many of the migrating birds that come to Delhi from as far as Africa and Russia take rest, feed or breed in the Yamuna river in Delhi. Unfortunately, like many other rivers in India, the Yamuna suffers from pollution and encroachment with is endangers the bird population.

Anand Arya is a bird photographer and an environmentalist who has been making a lot of efforts to save the Yamuna has set up an on-line petition in order to help convincing the Ministry of Environment and Forest to declare the stretch of the Yamuna river passing through Delhi as a Protected Area (a bird sanctuary).

He already has had meetings with the additional secretary of the Ministry and believes they view his suggestion very favourably. A little extra support through the petition may just help to get this done. So far he has collected over 400 signatures on the paper and 150 on line but the more the better, so if you want to support the birds of the Yamuna please sign the petition on: http://www.PetitionOnline.com/YamunaPA/

Thanks all!

Hi, Every winter i watch these birds in Yamuna , Unfortunately we didnt had any birds in Bharatpur this year.. There were more birds in Yamuna.. But I fear with rapid development activities around .. these birds might not return next year..

I have signed the petition..
