I was in Jaipur December 16-18 and Varanasi December 20 & 21.
I will try my best to upload the 2 pictures early next week. The Varanasi baby goat's dress is not frilly - my mistaken description. I will not let digital technology photography get my goat. Wish me luck. |

ok, here's a goat in a 'coat' more of a scraggy jumper, taken in Jaipur Feb 07 (not near Eid), his owners were very much amused to see Neil foolowing the goat around for some time trying to take his photo:

umm..... I ended up looking at something like a small mirror to me.
. No goat, no coat.[EDIT: Oops...Now I see it for some reason....earlier was a monkey...now a goat..in a coat......but it doesn't look like it can keep the goat any warmer ]Quite similar to your curiosity about coat-on-goat I saw quilt-on-horse and wondered...wow...how caring the owner is. For me it was quite new but was easy to guess the reason. Must be very cold at 0 deg. during night for these naked animals, I can imagine. Coat-on-Goat probably has the same reason. Warmth.

We saw loads of them too - all across Rajasthan, coats, jumpers, cardigans and t-shirts. We wondered why they were the only animals cared for in this way... Although we did see some pet dogs in coats. I have a photo somewhere... I'll try and find it. They were very cute, but goats are cute, especially the babies!

I'm attaching a photo that my mother took in Agra in one of the winding alleys behind the Taj Mahal in March 06. It's three goats wearing sweaters curled up on a cot. It was definitely not cold, but they looked pretty comfortable (sorry, the pic is a bit blurry).

Pahmina Goats Dying of Cold
Very sad news. Now you will know why they need coats.

Another effect of the very severe weather hitting Kashmir at the moment --- sad, yes, for farmers and animals. Life is very tough there just now. Thanks for the link.
I think we have to amend the subject though, now we have pictorial evidence, to Goats wearing Old Pullovers! |

I have added the pictures of the goats - finally triumphed over technology. My son was quite taken with the goats and monkeys on the trip.
As you can see, many of the goats are covered. I love the kid in the dress. The consensus from this thread seems to be that they need to keep warm. Thanks to all of you. |

It's really heartening to see the animals having some kindness shown during these cold times. They look so cute too - especially that kid in it's dress

Yes, I know, old thread but...
I was on the Eastern Shore of Virginia visiting my parents over the weekend.
In the distance I see a teenage girl with what looked like a smallish white puppy on a leash. It looked like your typical frou-frou small desinger dog dressed in a hot pink dress. As we got closer the truth was revealed - A small, young goat [I'd wager a few weeks old], on a leash wearing a hot pink dress complete with sequins. All I could think of was this thread - for the record it was warm out, then again the dress was way too pretty to be anything but for decoration. I didn't have the nerve to ask her what this was all about.... |
