What is this bird called?

See picture - I hope I managed to attach it!

We have those here a lot, they are circling our terrace and scream quite distinctively.

Are they eagles (as the locals here claim)? Or falcons or buzzards ... or what?

Is called Kite. Most common bird of prey in India. Indeed many people think they are eagles but they are not. There are a number of varieties in India.

.... there's lot's of these birds in Juhu too ...... they fly over the pigeons looking menacing - but I've never seen them eat a 'Karbutta' yet.

CHEEEEEEL - yes, that's how they sound!

I've never seen them eating anything at all. Although they sometimes seem to watch my cats on the terrace. But they are probably too fat

for them.

Ask me. Whe I used to be in school in Delhi, having my lunch, they would frequently swoop down and snatch it away from me. Sandwiches were a particular favourite. That was more than 25 years ago! I am sure their numbers have dwindled greatly.

15-20 years ago cheels (kite)are very common in Kolkata and they used to jump over the hands of the bearer who are carrying food packets.Alas!!!! they are very few in number now.One can seldom see a cheel in Kolkata now.Fortunately one lives adjacent to my home.

It's a Pariah kite and very easy to recognize because of its distinctive forked tail.

If you look around then you can observe another kite, the Brahminy kite. This is a beautiful white and brown (chestnut) bird. Invest in a pair of binoculars, you won't regret it

In Delhi during day time never go out eating your sandwitch or pastries after buying them from Wenger's. Kites know that many people do.....

Yeah! You're right Jyoti da, even their biological clock clicks better than quartz... I remember during my school days in Pathankot, they used to hover around in numbers over our school, nick in the time of lunch break. Pathankot being extremely cold during winters, we used to eat in groups on the school grounds under the warmth of blazing sun.... and our fav. sport used to be running and stamping on the shadows of these high soaring, swiftly moving, parantha loving Kites!!

Ahh..those days
