Pity there isn't a fourth black one, then!

---If you remember the original, very un-PC origin of that?

I wonder how kids say it today?

Oh boy. Racial connotations even here, eh? No, I never knew.

I guess the Dutch version is still current. I don't know, should ask the neigboring kids. Most of them far from Dutch, but they'll know. I suppose they may have a gangsta rap version

Gangsta rappas probably use the original still. it goes on...

Catch a nigger by his toe...

Then there's some stuff about letting go if he screams; I forget.

Aha! Yes, that rings a bell. Not so here, no, as far as I know. But then we have other songs... I have this fantastic children's booklet from way back when (1930s or '50s I reckon) that is perfectly ïnnocently entitled something like "Blackie Face" if you were to translate it, about, you guessed it, a little girl of such skin color & her quirky ways and trouble at adjusting, but of course our friendly society accommodates her all the same, no matter what her silly ways. Funnier still, in the colony where I was partly brought up such outdated books were still in use as teaching material. Imagine how those kids could relate to antequated stories of white and thoroughly bourgeois children frolicking about in the snow. Oh well...

Anyway, what was that about cats?

"if he screams, let him go" was what we knew. And 'Little Black Sambo' (children's classic story from years past) and golliwogs are now P.Incorrect too I believe. DSL etc. is too much of a mouthful when you call out their names - eenie, meanie is better!

Congratulations, Nick. Good news indeed.

On a quick read, couldnt make out if they are male or female. But

if male
Chico, Harpo and Groucho (and 'Minnie' the mother)

if female,
Michelle, Halle and Selina, (<sigh>) my three favourite catwomen
(and 'motherofallcats' )

If some male and some female, I would choose Groucho and Michelle first, (and 'Full Marx' for the mother )

Poor wee things!

It'd be one way to get them to move out, I suppose!

I was born in the early 1950s.

That's how it was then.

...Well, two of them were. We had a good look around, but were forced to think that a kitten's life is fragile one, especially when their mum has taken them to a place where large birds and stuff could get to them.

Anyway, Later in the day...

Thunderbirds Are Go!

I noticed she was sniffing around and mewing in the front garden near the house, and thought that a kitten might have run out there. I went to see, and heard a faint mewing that seemed to come from underground.

Being far from sure of my poor hearing, I called Mrs N to come quick and she confirmed it. There is a 4-inch drain pipe from the balcony onto which their previous cubby hole opens; I put my ear to it, and yes, I could clearly hear a plaintiff kitten.

Nothing could be seen from the top, or through an inspection hole.

Luckily the pipe only passed under soil and its path was fairly easily to follow. I cut and smashed it at a point where it had gor crushed, and I figured the kitten wouldn't have been able to pass. Then it wasn't too hard to use the seven or eight feet of leverage to remove the pipe from the elbow fitting at the house end.

We still couldn't see the kitten, and mum had obviously thought, "Oh sod it! I never liked that one anyway" and gone back to the other two. Mrs N could hear a faint meow from the couple of feet of pipe I couldn't see into. I fetched mum, who showed renewed interest, and it emerged when she called. It nearly went back in again when it saw us, but I grabbed it.

Phew!

Now we need a plumber and some new pipe.

Never mind; the pipe was crushed anyway.

I've closed up the back gate to the passageway. She can look after the front gate herself.

She's decidedly nervy, and seems to blame me for the kitten disappearance now! She is complaining if I touch anything in the vicinity, but still coming for petting.

She also has diarrhoea. Although she drinks water we were giving her cows' milk and I think we have to stop that. Her diet at the moment is raw chicken scraps (she eats everything; I've never seen a cat munch bone like that!) and leftovers from my mutton meels. She eats the veggie bit of the stew as well.
