Yes, we will watch out for those crows...

The box is behind a steel grill gate. It is by no means bird-proof, but they will have to cope with the feeling of being indoors if they go there. The box is closed, and would be difficult for a crow to negotiate the flap. I doubt that, if one got in, it could get out again! Getting in would be bad enough, though.

Hope they make it through well, Nick. Of course they picked you! You ever read R.A. Wilson's Schrödinger's Cat trilogy? You should.

It's on the shelf somewhere. I wouldn't understand it

But I certainly have a cat in a box. Four in fact: is it good enough if they watch each other?

Should do, I reckon

--> ps I mentioned the above book because it starts with some funny observations how cats are infinitely superior to dogs. And both to men. Or something. It's been a while

Congratulations!!!

I agree you should consider sterilization for the whole family... If you reckon that as expensive just wait until they grow up and start having babies!!! Food expenses will double that!

We had the same problem some years ago... My parents got two kittens for my birthday (brother and sister matter-of-factly...) and just six years later she'd been pregnant 4 times (5-4-3-4 kittens each)!!!
We managed to find new homes for some of them, others died and the rest apparently got the "travel bug" and run away... Pretty sad...

But hey, aren't they the cuttest thing ever???

With regards to naming. Ya' know, the family I stayed with in Nagpur had a dog ... named LUCY. I mentioned that I thought it was a bit odd that they'd name their pet with an English/American name. Their response to this was that there is NO WAY they'd name a DOOOGGGGGGG with an Indian name ... after all, it is only a dog and not a person. I thought it was HILARIOUS that they could stoop to using an English name, but wouldn't DREAM of using an Indian or Hindi name.

But I digress ... I say go with food names. And since I had such a hard time distinguishing between, Naan/Roti/Parantha/Chappati ... I think these would be GREAT ideas for names.

Congratulations Nick on the new arrivals. I'm a dog person myself, but kittens are so sweet and you should feel honoured that mamma cat brought them to live with YOU!!!

Oh yes, better watch your back now NickH..for crows, eagles (especially), snakes in the grass and plenty of other cats wanting to get the lions share and destroy your dear little new found family.

...and when they stop feeding from their mama, or if she dries up - don't ever give cows milk proper - powdered milk (i.e.'everyday') is much more digestable for cats and dogs' tummies

Some of the suggested names have been lovely - but how about naming them after some of the unique personalities that inhabit IM?

for example....

If one of them should turn out to have a fondness for desserts and the occasional protest, you could call it.....captain

If one of them should leave you in no doubt as to how it feels, you could call it......Dilli

And of course the feisty one that takes no prisoners would have to be.......nick jr

Congrats Nick and Mrs Nick!!!! I can't add any more than what's already been said by every Tom, Nick and Harry on IM. Enjoy your new family - I'm sure they'll bring you lots of kitty pleasure.

Congratulations on your feline family! We have five cats at home (there used to be seven). They are a source of endless entertainment and affection. Wait and see their characters before you decide on their names. Our eldest cat is called "Galini" which means tranquility (in Greek); her other name is "the Tasmanian devil" for obvious reasons. We used to have a cat called "Krishna", sadly passed away, or living another life under the lemon tree.

Thanks all for your kind remarks and suggestions.

I'm beginning to think these kittens may be a month old or more. It is a long time since I experienced kittens, and don't really know how to judge.

Anyway, they are certainly going to be a handful, especially having reached escaping age.

Here's a quick taster on the photo front:

Definitely older. If they were newborn, they'd look like teeny little mice still. Very cute!
