Damn: We've got a family!

It was not in the plan.

Babies of any species was not in the plan.

We have several cats that pass through our garden. Most of them ignore us, and just get on with their passing through. For a while now, one tabby-and-white cat has been passing through and shouting loudly at us, but not allowing us near.

That all changed with the provision of a few plates-full of non-veggie leftovers and bowls of milk, and even some specially-bought chicken scraps. You should have seen the look of horror and indignation on the faces of our crows when we gave the chicken scraps to the cat: the way they looked at us, the food, the cat ...and at us again!

So, over a day or so, she changed from being a 'we can talk, but please stay ten feet away' cat to a 'tickle my tummy now' cat. But still we would not see her, sometimes for several days.

The last few days she has been regular. The last few days, she doesn't wait for us but comes to the front door and shouts.

And today we heard the high-pitched squeaks.

In the passageway at the side of the house, there is a big cardboard box that we fill with newspapers before recycling. At the moment there are just a few at the bottom of the box.

And three kittens.

Damn. Babies. Responsibility. India is not a place where people come to your door asking if they can have a kitten.

She will not let us look closely, but I've spotted three, small but eyes open.

I have a feeling that she did not give birth to them here, but has decided that we are going to be the providers of their home --- in that way that cats just do.

So we now have four cats.

Congratulations! Does that mean that now the feline species outnumber humans in your household? We have a black cat that begs for food all day ...

Oh bless! And oh dear- pets are hard on the wallet. Will you be able to get them neutered and innoculated, or just give them a place to stay? Getting involved with stray animals is heart warming but expensive!

Hi Nick, Congratulations! Animals are clever, aren't they! They 'smell' the person who is going to take care of them from miles away. I know all about that.

May I suggest sterilisation for the mother once the kittens are somewhat bigger?

In the meantime enjoy the new life!

Sterilisation --- You may indeed suggest it, and it will be an urgent issue for mother and young alike --- but its going to be tough, having just earned her trust, to put her in a box and the her to the vet.

In our previous house, there was one just accross the road. Here, I don't know.

I was thinking of calling her biryani!

You can't have photos of the kittens until she trusts us to open that box top. We haven't seen more than their faces yet! Not rushing this one.

Mum, yes, pic soon.

My last cat experience here was sadly short-lived. Maybe that's why fate has sent me four this time!

maybe we could run a competition on IM to name them!

Of course their names would have to suit the characters - and that might take a while to come through.....

"You should have seen the look of horror and indignation on the faces of our crows when we gave the chicken scraps to the cat: the way they looked at us, the food, the cat ...and at us again!" Nick, watch out for those crows. They're smart buggers, for sure, and aggressive, and they might try to attack the kittens if mama cat leaves them unguarded!

Nick

Your story reminds me of exactly the same thing happening to my parents. Now they have about 6 kittens running around - they come to the back door looking for the bowls of milk. My German Shepard sits on the back landing waiting for them too - scares the hell out of Dad and Mom when he decides to chase one. But, Mom says, that is nature.

Names? How about Ilu, Bilu, Dilu and Pilu (smallest).

Cheers
