3 homes needed in Goa

At the moment we have 3 dogs in the shelter here in Goa that really need homes.

All three were owners dogs, most likely from foreigners, who left them in the evening tied on a tree at the shelter.

All are absolutely healthy, sterilized and fully vaccinated. They have been for weeks in the cages and they really are desperate to get out.

1. Very friendly, brown female, of about 18 months. She loves company, is loving towards everybody she meets and will sit with you for hours on end.

2. Very lovely, black, white and brown, female of about 18 months. She is a little on the bigger side, looks very strong but is very affectionate. She is full of beans and can't wait to get out of that cage

3. A very beautiful black male with longish hair of about 3 years old. He is a bit shy in the beginning but is the type of dog of will turn into a very loyal dog to his owner and who will be protective his home

So is there anybody out there is is looking for a wonderful companion?

P.S. Keep in mind that an adult dog is much easier to have than a puppy. They generally are so happy to have a new home that within a few days they tend to fit into their new families. A hassle-free, totally loyal friend for life! What more does one want!

HI Ravi,

Nice to hear from you and great that you want to adopt a dog.

You are based in Bangalore, right? For Bangalore the best place to find a dog that is in real need of a home is CUPA (http://www.cupabangalore.org). I worked with them for about 3 years and they are a very deserving organisation.

If I misunderstood and you are interested in dogs in Goa or elsewhere please do not hesitate to do let me know.

Also, are you looking for a puppy or an adult dog?

Two days ago we picked up this very old male in Calangute. He is very malnourished as you can see on the photos.

We believe that he has been dumped because he is old and of course could not cope on the streets. But surprisingly he is in good spirits.

As far as we can tell, apart from being old and malnourished, he is healthy for an old dog. He is a bit stiff and has the beginning of cartarc on one eye but otherwise seems absolutely sound.

We need a good home in Goa that is willing to look after him for the time that rests him (probably no more than a year or so, possibly even less).

Thanks for your support .

The old man is doing well for now. He sleeps, eats and sleeps more . We see it often with strays that the first few days they are just so tired they do not much else.

Tomorrow he will get a health check up again. And than we really need a home for him as he will not survive if we put him back on the street. So keep fingers crossed.

Hello All
I'm new to Mumbai. I want to get a couple of dogs in my area spayed, all female, just finished heats. Would appreciate advice on reliable hospitals/NGOs for the same. I stay near the Vet College,Parel; is that a good place. Thanks all.

Essarpriya,
absolutely fantastic you want to do this.

Here is the website where you get more information. www.bombayspca.org and check the "Hospital" Tab on top

I highly recommend them. They are doing a great job and they have excellent facilities. The Petit Animal Hospital is a charity set up by the Petit family (Parsees) some 130+ ago and together with the BSPCA they provice the infrastructure (buildings, administrative staff, etc) The medical staff are from the adjacent Vet College in Parel. They are all on one campus.
They have 24/7 facilities.

When in Bombay I usually make it a point to go there and make a donation. Even my driver, a very nice elderly sikh gentleman has developed a soft spot for them and is impressed by the work they are doing.

Great initiative! This is just the kind of help that we need!

If only everybody would organise once a year to sterilise just 1 dog, the stray population would be solved within 2 years.

Indeed SPCA does great work!

Whether the vet college does sterilisations I am not sure, but I do know that many in India do so. However keep in mind that although sterilisations are simple routine operations, it is important that the animal goes in as healthy as possible (if it is a stray give it a few days some good food) and that after the operation the dog is looked after for 3 days or so to make sure the wound heals properly. This is the reason why most shelters keep the dog afterwards but the vet college may not have such facilities, so better you check before hand.

Good luck! And thanks again.

I think my previous post was not quite clear, since essarpriya particularly asked about the Vet College in Parel/Mumbai

The Vet College, the Animal Hospital and the BombaySPCA all share the same campus. A leafy haven in congested Mumbai, and if I am not mistaken the land has been donated by the Petit family some 130 years ago. (it's huge and absolutely priceless in today's terms) It is a very cleverly thought out scheme. The animal hospital also set up by this Parsi family 130+ years ago has excellent facilities and all the medical staff are from the Vet College.

I dont't know for how long they usually keep strays for after care but of course that can always be arranged individually, especially if they are brought in by someone and the costs are being taken care of. They treat approx 500 animals each day so space is always an issue.

If you need any help with the costs essarpriya in case you feel the bitches should stay longer, let me know, I would donate to the Animal Hospital directly.

Birds, how is the situation for the old chap you are trying to find a home? I am really concerned since I have a soft spot for the elderly and vulnerable, four legged and two legged alike

Thank you, birds, for all your efforts!

Spaying etc

Thanks Indiaddict and Birds.
I am grateful for your concern and advice. SPCA is a pretty place, I spent a long time there with the dogs in the enclosures this Sunday.
I wish you two wouldn't address me as a sporadic dog lover, I've been fairly allright on the ABC front for some years now.
Will tell you how it went.

Did we do that? A sporadic dog lover? Sorry, if you feel that way. But I do realise now that you have a lot of experience as regards to ABC.

Anyway your specific question and my answer was about the Vet College. Had I known that you know the place anyway and spent there a long time on Sunday I wouldn't have replied to your yesterday's post in such a lengthy way explaining the place.

Hi Priya,

Good to hear you have been active with ABC! And in my book there are no sporadic dog lovers, dogs would never allow for it ;-).

Do let us know how things went!

English Cocker Spaniel puppy for adoption

HI! This is a tough decision for me to make but its time for me to accept the fact that being without domestic help and a working woman, I cannot single-handedly take care of two dogs. I have an aged Irish Setter, Buddy, who is often sick these days and a livewire English Cocker Spaniel puppy, Curly. I am not able to give Curly the time and attention he needs. Also, I am shot and exhausted from the effort of taking care of both of them and the house.
Curly is 9 months old and a playful and naughty boy who loves attention and messing around with Buddy. He has a very sweet disposition and is very friendly by nature. He is energetic as an Energizer bunny and loves to run! The best thing about him is that he has spirit and never-give-up attitude. He is a pure bred orange roan, largely white with brown markings on face, back and legs. His vaccination record is up-to-date. I would like to give him to some one who would love him unconditionally & who will give him a good home. He is one of the best things that has ever happened to me and I would like to see him find a happy loving home.

evah - I have moved your thread post to this existing thread re animal adoption. It is a more suitable place for it to be.

Be very careful when you give him away. A lot of people want pedigrees just for the sake of them being pedigrees and not because they want to love a dog. It is so sad...
