Tiger parts

just had a HUGE row with my friend in India who wanted to replace a necklace that was stolen with a tigers nail on it. A real one I said... you are kidding me ???? well they are dead anyway he said.. they are killed for lots of things.. the villagers who kill them are uneducated..
yes but YOU are educated and you buy them!

Is there really so little education amongst Indian people generally about the decline of tigers, do they not care at all?? Is my friend the rule or the exception to it with his beleifs?

Am so upset...

Religion (or superstition) comes first, I'm afraid

I've seen a lot of these things around kids' necks.

And I doubt that the majority of Indians do care about tigers, forests, environment etc etc --- or would be in such a mess?

I'm going to get slated for making this generalisation about over a billion people --- and, thankfully there are those who are passionate about it. But I think they have an uphill struggle.

See the threads about littering and stuff.

true dat.

& pretty much the std. answer you'll get when you question them on it.

Dead as a doornail, so why bother? Not realising their purchase WILL lead to more deaths.

I guess so.. it is heart breaking. I mean the litter is one thing, and that really gets me down I have to say in India.. but I can sort of understand that when there is not the same system in place we have in the UK for rubbish collections.. even so it is mainly about attitude.

But Tigers... surely a creature that is the national animal and verging on extinction is a bit more important... not to mention the revenue it creates for the tourist industry.

What is wrong with everyone??

But there is! And better, even! Rubbish is taken away from houses in our street every day (you don't get that in London) and the street is swept.

Just makes people more inclined to chuck stuff over the garden wall....

Well, actually, there isn't that much in this street.

However, where I am moving there are empty plots. And every empty plot gets used to graze cattle. And to dump rubbish.

Not every indian think like that, I had been recently to Corbett and I met local in Ramnagar. They are very much consious about the fact of decline in the tiger numbers.

On the other hand the law should always be made for the people who buy such stuff.

The older claws and teeth that were mounted for jewellry purposes back in the Raj days are still traded on Auction sites
worldwide .... as are the old ivory carvings.

I'm not so sure I agree with "if it is old it is alright policy" because it opens the door for enterprising dupers .... but that's they way it is!
