Just for your information, I work with strays in India for the past 15 years in the cities of Delhi and Bangalore and in various rural areas in Karnateka and Goa. I can tell you that there are plenty of people of all kinds of background, including the very poor, who are prepared to pay for vaccines as well as other treatments. In any case, for those who can really not afford government clinics provide these vaccines for free.

Hey birds and everyone else,

So I've started giving the dogs rice + soya chunks + milk , bread etc. etc. as one or two of the daily 3 feeds, the other meal being Pedigree Professional Junior. I've also started giving calcium supplements recommended by the vet. The female doggy still eats shit and laps piss
Also, birds, you mentioned about giving them a very uncooked bone once a week? Do you mean raw bones? Is giving the raw bones safe?Would mutton soup bones be ok?

Anyway, so there's one more issue I would like feedback about. The pups, being pups, indulge in play fighting all the time. No matter how many distractions like rawhide bones, choostix, they're growling and jumping on top of each other after their interest in the bones has worn off. I know it's all play, but the roughhousing by the sharp toothed lil male puppy sometimes causes scratches just below the eye of the (bigger) female pup. I wanted to know, is there any cream or home remedy that's safe for applying near the eyes that would dissuade the dogs from biting in that area?

Sorry I did not reply before, the message had escaped my attention.

The diet you are giving sounds very good. You could add a bit of fish or meat in it if you like. Fat fish, like mackerel, is very good for puppies.

Calcium supplements is good, especially for ex-strays as the mother is often low on calcium if it was her second or third litter. But with the diet you give them they get everything they need so you could stop the calcium supplements if you like. In any case there is no need to continue after they are six months old (However, if ever you would take a six month old pup off the street, which never had a good diet, you would give calcium for about six months).

Raw bones are good, also a good, natural source of calcium. Do not give bones that have been cooked because through cooking they become brittle and sharp pieces can puncture the stomach & intestines. On the other hand, fresh raw bones can be chewed up almost completely without any harm. The digestion system of a dog is similar to that of a wolf, from which it descents, and as such designed to digest raw meat and raw bones. The only thing is that with puppies the bones should be so big that they can not swallow them in one go, so indeed raw mutton soup bones would be very good.

Yes, playing pups can be very boisterous but generally they do not do serious harm. I would not know of a cream to keep them away from certain body parts. In any case I would not advice it. Pups playing is about learning to defend themselves and to learn where the limits are of the other. In due course the female will learn how to keep her face out of the play which is a good learning experience for both.

If she has a small wound on the eye lid you can put on Ciplox eye cream. Scratches on other parts of the body you can treat with Neosporin powder. Both are cheap and available at any pharmacy

It sounds like your pups are having a great time .

Hi birds,

Thanks so much for your inputs.

Yeah, the pups seem to be having a great time, even more so at present, since we've brought them to my in-laws' place for the weekend where there's a big garden for them to dig up dirt, uproot plants and generally chase each other round and round. Mom-in-law wouldn't be too pleased to see her garden being messed around with, but she's away and pa-in-law is indulgent and only sounds out a not-too-stern "No" when they dig up the garden. The only person in the house who's not too pleased with their visit is the resident dog, since they insist on him playing with them even when he just wants to sleep....but even he's tolerant (except when they try and steal the chicken from his bowl) and acquiesces to their demands to play, from time to time.
Thanks again and two big woofs from the pups.
As I type this out, they're lazing around, having just downed a quarter kilo of mutton (and possibly some chicken that they managed to steal off the bigger dog).
