I don't get it, a bag of mutton biryani? Meat jell-o? Got any pictures of these products?

Explanation: Pedigree in a can looks and wiggles like jell-o when it slides out of the can with that reverse sucking sound. Take-out food like biryani comes in little silver bags heat-sealed on each end. It's a rather ingenious way of keeping food hot. But of course, in the end, these containers only add to the plastic bag strewn landscape that is all of South Asia.

I have found that rice need not be ground into meal as it is with most dog foods. Rice is perfectly good for dogs -- especially street dogs who'll burn the starch pronto -- and they eat it up if you make sure to mix it really well with just a little meat product; just enough to flavor the rice.

I think I may have mentioned this elsewhere on IM, but I turned from my desk (in my flat) the other day to see a local boy standing in my doorway, chomping away on dog biscuits that were on top of my fridge. I think I'm going to put a bowl of them out on the table at work and enjoy the activity.

Why does my dog prefer cat food (Whiskas canned tuna/salmon) to his own mixture of dry dog food (Pedigree) and canned dog food (forget the name, but it's the only brand I could find in Gurgaon)?

The poor cats have to manage with whatever dog food remains, after Buddy has made fast work of their repast.

This is almost ALWAYS an olfactory issue. Smell the dry dog food and then smell the cat food and remember how anything that smells horrible to us smells like flowers of the gods to dogs.

Also, dogs have the "dog and ball syndrome" in a major way because, well, the analogy is about dogs and dogs are dogs. What a very strange sentence that was.

Dog and Ball Syndrome: When you break up with your significant other because you're just not that into them and the moment they start dating someone else, you want them back. Dogs don't really care about the ball laying on the floor until some other dog takes an interest; then it's like, "holy shit, that's a great ball! I LOVE that ball! Gimme that ball! Gimme gimme!"

Mm...maybe this analogy doesn't fit your dog's love of the cat's food. (What I find really horrible is that dogs will eat the cat food on either end of the feline mastication process. Then the stupid mutt will lick your face and now your face smells like your cat's ass via your dog's tongue. It's humiliating, really.)

Wait, I know -- every time we'd go out to a restaurant, my ex-wife would always pick at everything on my plate. I'd say, "shit, lady, why didn't you just order what I ordered if this is what you wanted?" She'd reply, "Because it tastes better when it's on your plate." So maybe you should just switch the dog and cat bowls while I take a serious look at my past relationships.

chief, you just brought some unpleasant memories with that dog and ball phrase.

You see, I can't eat gulab jamuns without thinking of what the chef said in jest to me.

"dog balls in cow piss"

Now, you can't take that image out of your head either!

Time to visit the shrink again!

Those are those sweet balls deep fried, right? If so, I LOVE those. I like them burnt, a little. I always ask the guys doing the deep frying to give mine an extra 30 seconds or so. Then I put the vanilla ice cream on top.

If gulabjamuns means something else, please disregard!

Well, you know more than I do about that name! I'll do some 'research'.

BS (sorry again!), why do you insist on sinking to new levels of insanity with each post? Now you have put off approximately ten thousnad people, who will never face a Gulab Jamun again without some trauma.

I think you are trying to compete with my thread about the most inane post ever. And I think you are succeeding!

Yes, Gulab Jamun. You know, in China they eat dog and they think eating the balls of animals help fertility. Personally, I have neither tried dog or balls from an animal.

So, carry on eating Billyshake!

I'm guilty on that one, I'm afraid. I've eaten Rocky Mountain oysters a few times (bull's balls deep fried in batter). Too salty, but it feels good to eat an animals nuts while simultaneously looking the castrated fella right in the face. "Looka me, steer. I'm actually eating your testicles, you son of a bitch."

Okay, I've eaten Rocky Mountain oysters, but not in front of the steer. It's an odd thought, though.

Bumping this thread up.

I've got a couple of queries, would appreciate your input:

1) At the moment, I'm feeding my two adopted street pups Pedigree Puppy Junior (Professional Range) 3 times a day, about 225 gm per dog per day. However, it's pretty expensive (595 Rs for a 3kg pack) which would last approx. 1 week. Can I give them home cooked rice, dal, milk, eggs and curds as a replacement for one or two of the meals? What home cooked food would be suitable for dogs? We're non-vegetarian, so can get them chicken and fish as well, but not everyday, maybe once a week. The dogs are 2.5 motnh male and 3.5 month female.

2) Is it weird that one of the dogs is interested in eating crap and pee? She laps up the pee when the other one pees. She also goes really longingly at cow dung on the road when I take her for a walk. If cow dung is sufficiently nutritious, I could save a packet by just gathering some off the road and substituting that for the expensive Pedigree professional .

.
225 gram 3x per day is too much. After the age of 6 months, the average Indian stray dog size can do with about 100 gram dry food, 50gr in the morning and 50 gr in the evening. If you supplement that once a week with a very uncooked bone, their diet is reasonably complete. Between 3 and six months you can feed them three times a day 30 to 50 gr. Puppies between 1 and 3 months, 5 or 6 times a day small quantities. If you going to reduce their food intake, you have to do so gradually.

Although large pet food manufactures try to tell that it is not good for dogs to eat human food, I do not believe that. In fact dry food, with all its additives, is likely to be more harmful, especially for the kidneys. On the web you can also lots of discussions about the advantages of fresh food over dry food. The foods you suggest is absolutely fine to feed them. As long as the food is not too greasy, they are fine and live just as long. Dry food is convenient for humans but not necessarily for the dog.

With regards to your second point, many puppies and young dogs is eat shit and pee. Like most animals (and apparently human babies too), they know instinctively what their diet is lacking and how they need to supplement this. As long as the shit is not coming from humans or sick dogs and your dogs have had their 7in1 vaccinations, I don't think you need to worry. Most dogs grow out of it after a year or so. The only thing is that you may want to deworm them a bit more often. How often do you deworm them at the moment?
