Some of the tainted pet food has apparently made it into feed for hogs. Federal agencies are trying to determine if it was actually fed to animals and whether it may have reached the human food supply.

Oh dear

Now that they are worried about human products as well this should get major media attention.

That at least is good!

Just a word of warning: Iams are pretty bad. Or this one. And here is a list of good and bad pet food companies (Pedigree which was mentioned somewhere else in the thread are on the bad list): Pet food companies that abuse animals.

Buy local folks! This China thing first surfaced in Canada about 5 years back with a popular honey brand - they were producing a blend with Chinese honey - that was including some high concentration of some weird and untested antibiotic to kill bee parasites.

.....you don't want to be another countries Guinea Pig.

I know The thing is that you don't get many cat food brands to choose from here in India. Here in Pune we have Whiskas, Sportmix (which mine won't eat), Purina (haven't seen it for a while though), sometimes we have ProCat, and sometimes Iams. Iams seems to be the best of the lot, quality-wise. I don't like to feed mine only Whiskas, so I have been going back and forth between Iams and ProCat. But ProCat isn't available at the moment. So I'm stuck with Whiskas for now which according to bird's list in the other thread is also tested on animals ... I wish there was more choice here!

Does anyone know about ProCat?

Thanks Noodle for your links - they worked fine the first time (cats then dogs ones)I know there is Iams in Australia - I shall let my friends know about this in case they don't already. Also, good this is a sticky because it is important information and a really shocking thing to happen.

Lots of Pet food entrepreneurs have emerged in Canada over the last 10 years - making organic and hand baked pet food ...... and are earning a small fortune with the recent bad news/scare. Maybe it's time some budding pet lover in India put hand to stove and penetrated the huge market/demand for such there!!!!!????!!!!!

Problem is that there's not much demand yet. And that most pet owners won't be willing to fork out much for pet food.

Wanted to come back once more to this concern. I don't think that we do have to worry about this too much as most recalled foods are wet foods - hard to repack, if at all possible! There is one recalled dry food but I can't remember the name ... And Royal Canin only took theirs back as a precaution (so they say).

That's wish-washy Noodle - create a demand - go for it!

I do not want to be anybody's guinea pig, my country or other countries/companies!

You're right! I am sure this pet food scandal is only the beginning of an endless number of other food problems, especially as China is becoming such a large food producer and they do not have the slightest regard for either people or animals. Oh yeah, it cheap right! Well there is obviously a price for that too! This time it is your dog/cats life, the next time it might be yours.

I am afraid that is not necessarily so. They can re-heat wet food and make anything else out of it, dry pet food, chicken food or whatever. Re-packing will not be a problem, unfortunately.

I am sure there is a market. The problem is not so much demand, as PeakXV says, demand can be created and money is no longer the issue either in many cases. The big problem is lack of awareness. Create awareness and you have a market.

PeakXV, can we get names of those companies? Perhaps we can start sending them emails asking them to come into India. They can probably get a grant for it too!
