My Wifes Cats from SFO to HYD

My wife says I need to find out how to get her two cats to HYD if I'm going to have any chance of getting her to move there I know those are long flights so the usual drug them and put them in a carrier may not be the answer. Anybody out there that had to solve this problem with their relocation?

Hello Kitty

Tajkazil: I moved your thread from Moving to India to this one, dogs, cats, etc, because I believe you'll find some great help from the wonderful IM animal minded membership!

First off, living where you do, I bet there are allot of vets in your area who know the best about your options to get kitty to India. Lots of folks going to India to live in the Bay area. Plus, you have this site to ask questions about how to keep kitty healthy once you're there. I'd pick your airline first, then have some real info to give the vet about how long the flights are, etc. Ask the airlines what you get for your kitty $$$ ticket in terms of animal care en route.

I'd feel sorry for the cats -- it's 20+ hours of flying and plane changes.

Tajkazil - are you moving long-term or for a few weeks/months? Particularly if you mean the latter, I agree with WWUSA. It's a rough enough trip for humans

My cats here are indoor-only because it's not safe to let them outside other than my own yard. They're used to their food, litter, etc. all of which are getting easier to find in India but still...with my husband and I we've decided since he doesn't like visiting India anyway, he'd rather stay home with the cats. I do the same when he goes visits his mother.

Relocating is of course trickier, which is a reason we haven't done it. Sorry, not much help here just putting myself in the shoes of a cat, I wouldn't want any part of it.

Yes it is for a longtime I'm coming to work at Novartis. The problem as you know is that these two are babies so I can't just leave them home and get 'subs' while we are there. I'm going to talk with a vet today will be calling the airlines too.

Quite a number of people have done it with dogs and some with cats. I hope that some of those will check in here. I would think that it would be easier than for a dog..

I hear ya, yes definitely I'd want them with me too

Recently there was a really nice post by someone who moved to Kolkata with their cat and dog. If you scroll down you should see that and other threads.

Namaste,

I was not able to find the other related strings below I think they were most connected becuase of the SFO title of my thread. hopfully others will still check in on this one with someother sugeetions. But at the moment is seems like the most human way to bring them over is with several shorter flights and long layovers in between.

The fewer stops would seem to me to be the less stressful..

Here's the most recent one I had in mind:
Taking Dogs and cat to India - lets get some new info here - May 2009

There are a handful of direct flights from US to India e.g. Newark to Bombay on Continental but not from your part of the country. Emirates has non-stops from SFO to Dubai, so might check that route going in to HYD.

Jay and I have had negative experiences with tranquilizers for our cats when we moved from SFO to DC. Anyway, good luck, and do check the threads for info on litter, food, etc. because you should be prepared to make adjustments there and might be easier to get the cats used to these changes before you leave e.g. to regular clay litter in case you're using clumping or pellets. We use World's Best corn clumping, and I did some scouting while in Delhi & Bombay, but no luck.

Ditto their food, very few choices there and mostly dry. Hopefully you'll have enough time to get all that sorted out before you leave the States. Good luck and hope everything goes very smoothly!

Hi Taj, cats can stay longer than dogs becuase they can use the litter box, so I dont think its a problem for them.

Also, I was wondering if you are taking everything with you, i.,e are you only taking luggage or the stuff being sent over cargo?

As it stands now only luggage the rest will be shipped so the cats can go as excess baggage (now there's a metaphor

Bringing cats to Hydie

Check the pet postings again - I flew from DC to Hydie (via Delhi) with Air India and I put up some information specific to Air India. Let me know what you do - I still have the contact name for the agent that helped with Air India.
