My fosters

I have to blow off some frustration.

As some of the regulars of the Dogs, Cats and Langurs forum may know, I often foster stray dogs so to increase their chances on being adopted.

Many of the stray dogs look not too good when they are taken off the street, not even the puppies, but if you feed them well for some weeks and give them back some confidence, they will turn into adorable, fun bundles of fur which are much more adoptable. Most of the time this works really well and we have been able to find many good homes but not always.

About two months ago a lovely, black pup was adopted through the shelter but she was brought back two weeks later for being too sickly. It turned out they fed her only white rice so she turned anemic which resulted in her being lethargic, not eating and losing weight quickly.

The people said they did not know and said they were willing to take her back if she would get better. So I fostered her for several weeks and she turned into a very loving, little lab look-alike at which point we brought her back to her family.

Now two weeks later, going back to give her the first vaccinations, I found her tied on a roof terrace without any shelter against the sun, no water and, it appeared nobody had taken her for a walk for days.

The poor thing was completely dehydrated and really, really scared. When I enquired I was told the servant who was looking after her had gone to his village and they had forgotten!!!! When I tried to understand more they said they found her too ugly to stay in the garden so they locked her away so no visitors would see her.

I guess I do not need to explain how raving mad I became.

Anyway, so now I have a new dog in my household.

Attached her photo.

Unfortunately, these stories are all too common. How many dogs have I seen chained up in the garden/terrace through night and day. I mean, why do such people keep dogs - they think dogs are a nice showpiece or what ? I have seen people walking by and saying why do these stupid animals bark...people come to my house and ask me to chain up my dog etc etc.

One needs to exercise caution in giving a dog away to someone...
tough call I know and very often it's a matter of instinct. I remember the time we came across these two pups in a restaurant in Manali - my wife asked the lady owner to give one of the pups but she was reluctant - wife continued playing with the pups and suddenly kissed them (lip to lip)...the owner exclaimed : only a dog lover can do that ! And we got a pup....Tango is seven years old now - he's the eldest of my three sons.

Some good news. The past two weeks we managed to find homes for 9 puppies.

Of course new ones still arrive. This morning the tally was 25 among which 8 tiny ones with their eyes still closed.

We also have a very pretty pomeranian look alike female and a blond coloured labrador look alike female. Both have been around already two weeks which is a bit surprising as the ones that look like pedigrees normally are taken quickly.

His brother has Parvo so we have to see whether he will make it.

Dobbermann found between Pilerne and Saligao

I walk my dogs every day on a large rocky plateau located between Pilerne and Saligao. It is a beautiful area without people or domestic animals but there are lots of birds, hares, snakes .

This evening my dogs started to bark at something which was responded to by another dog barking. When I went to look I found a female dobbermann crouching in the bushes.

As luck would have it I had a little bread with me which I use to train my latest pups. In the beginning I was a bit apprehensive as she was an unknown dog but she took the bread without aggression so I mustered the courage to grab her collar.

She turned out to be very friendly, somewhat scared but also seemed quite relieved. Strangely my other dogs which are not usually friendly to adult dogs tolerated her, not sure why . So I managed to take her home, still another 20 minutes walk.

She is about 7 months, is well fed but her skin is poor and she seems pregnant (but I am not sure).

I can not make out whether she has been abandoned (because of pregnancy perhaps) or whether she got lost, possibly because of the fireworks this week as the Ganesha festival is celebrated here in Goa.

Tomorrow I will try to find her owner or else an adoption home.

Hi, you are doing such a great job over on Goa.Well done!!!!!!!!
I was there a few years ago and made freinds with some dogs on the beach, it broke my heart when I had to leave them at the end of my trip.Im not even a doggie person, more for cats really.I just cant bear to think of them suffering.
My daughter is a vet nurse in Manchester and tells me off when I come home from different countries with stories about the animals. She has seen me so upset at times.Thinks I shouldnt get involved.Easier said than done!
I have bought dog food in Malaysia, cat food in Morroco and Greece. In fact I dont think Ive ever had a holiday where I havent fed animals.
Carry on the good work!I really admire you for your efforts.
I will be in touch with you privately to see if I can help in any way.

Thumbs up Owner found!

I am happy to inform that 10 minutes ago the owner of the Doberman came to pick her up. It turned out she was called Angel.

The people saw the ad we placed in the newspapers. I am very happy because of Saturday I am off to Europe and it was not easy to keep her with my other dogs.

Thanks for the support Laney. I will reply to your PM.

Need homes for 3 little girls

Hi All,

I got a call from the GSPCA that they have three little dog girls aged between 5 weeks and 2 months which are in desperate need of homes.

They have been there for several weeks now and are losing spirit as well as weight. Despite the best attempts of GSPCA, a shelter is not a healthy place for young animals. If they stay much longer they are likely to die.

I would have found homes for them myself but I am in Europe at the moment so the only thing I could do was to place advertisments. Several people replied to these but they all took male pups (of course I am happy for them too).

It is often like this, females are not wanted (at least not the 4-legged variety ).

I have seen them before I went to Europe and they are really cute
so is there anybody in Goa who is willing to adopt a little girl?

I can take care of the vaccination and sterilization when I come back mid October.

Got new ones

Three days ago I got three new fosters; two little brothers who are quite sickly, and one tiny black & white girl who is perky (see photo). I have homes for all three , that is if I can get the boys in good health.

Also can tell that we found a home for the Pomerian and Lab look-a-like girls mentioned in earlier posts. They now live with a Maharastrian lady who has a house on the beach and who already has several stray dogs, so their lives will be fun.

Unfortunately, the three girls I wrote about in the post before this one, had to be put down last week because they shared an enclosure with a boy dog which had rabies and bite five others including these three girls.

Also, the little dog with Parvo did not make it. His brother was more lucky as we found him a very nice home with a family in Mangalore.

Gosh Birds you are doing such a wonderful job and these dogs are just gorgeous.

Let me get settled and think about it all for a while. Maybe we could take on a second dog (my dog would love it) or maybe help you with the fostering (if you want help). Anyway, keep up the good work!

Hey do you guys dog-sit too? It sounds like you have your hands full so probably not, but thought I'd ask. I'm terrified of leaving my dog when I go out of town for precisely the reasons you named.

Thanks Carla.

No dog sitting I am afraid, my big dogs tolerate puppies but are aggressive to other adult dogs. There are some places which do but none of them are great but I know a woman who is excellent with animals and she stays at people's home when they are away to look after their pets.

Fancy going for a drink this evening?

20:30 in the TravelBar in Candolim, opposite the Old Ice Factory. It is a tiny place which doesn't look like a bar/restaurant but do go inside.

They will allow dogs as long as well behaved, which I believe yours is .

Looking forward to see you later and meet Lucy.
