Look! What I found this evening

This evening, like a good Goan monsoon, it was raining cats and dogs.

Suddenly one of my dogs ran outside and started to bark at the gutter. You must know that although this dog is very ugly, he is also very clever and normally hates to go out when it rains. So, I braved the weather to have a look. And that was just in time because these three were swept through the gutter. Three 3/4 week old pups!

Obviously stray pups but in reasonable good health, especially after a milky dinner and a cosy box to sleep in.

They can sleep while I have to think what to do with them. I don't want to keep them as I have already six dogs which drive the neighbours mad.

Sending them to Animal Rescue is a dead sentence as they tend to euthanize very small animals.

So, anybody with a bright idea? Or anybody interested in a Goan monsoon pup?

Congrats to you both on the rescue.

I do hope you manage to find a home[s] for them...

If there is a Blue Cross kind of setup in Goa, they may take them.

Else I am afraid you will have to either let them go or find a home for them yourself.

3/4 weeks is terribly young... They will likely require constant (every few hours) feeding and gentle rubbing to get their bowels going (imitating their mother's licking).

Maybe see if you can find a nursing she-dog in the area who'll accept them. Good luck with it in any case, they look awfully cute.

I also suggest that if you are going to keep them awhile, you may have to vaccinate/innoculate them... or at least a checkup at the vet. You have six other dogs..

We got a stray puppy once who was dying. Our other dog fell sick too.

Great job birds! And a big praise to your intelligent dog too!

Why don't you have a look around the area - they can't have been swept away from too far - somewhere must be the mother, probably looking for them. You will recognize her by her enlarged teets. That would be the best for all of them at the moment.

Good luck!

Actually, looking at the picture more closely, they look older than 3-4 weeks to me. I would guess 5 weeks.

Monsoon pups update

Hi All,

Thanks for all the support. Sorry to have been off line for a bit, these small threesome keep me quite busy.

The first day was a bit hard work because we tried to find the mother but failing that had them checked up and dewormed. My other dogs were a bit taken aback by these little ‘intruders’ and are also demanding lots of attention.

But now the puppies are doing very well now. They spend the day eating, playing, peeing, sleeping and being super-cute, just what puppies are supposed to do (see photo). According to the vet they are very healthy and with some extra care should do well.

We have decided to try to find homes for them instead of sending them off to an animal shelter. For starters this Sunday there will be a advert in the local paper which may get some results. Will keep you posted about this. In the meantime should any of you know of a good home please let me know.

By the way, when I found them they were full of fleas and ticks. I wanted to get rid of those asap because of my other dogs. As you can not use normal flea shampoo/powder on pups I tried washing them with EM, short for Effective Micro-organisms a concoction full of beneficial microbes which has multiple usages including being an insecticide but you can also clean water with it making it drinkable, so it is completely harmless. It worked wonders; no ticks, no fleas, no chemical smell and happy puppies.

Thumbs up

Great to hear Birds. From what little I can see they look really well; good & shiny fur, tails proudly curled upwards... it's a (little) dog's life! Well, with six dogs already on your hands there must be worse substitute moms

Cheers for your efforts

Birds

That was fantastic. So what exactly is EM? Do you purchase it at a store? More details please.

Cheers

Nattusbs

PS: If I were in India right now, I would definitely take one of them.

My GOD are they cute!

Do you have a pet shop in Goa? You could hang a flyer there too.

But please (!) be very picky when you give them away - you know the Indian habits of tying dogs or getting them only for the children as toys etc (very common in the West too, mind you!).

Maybe it would be good to ask for a fee, to cover your expenses, that way you're more sure the person really wants a dog.

Good luck! And really great job!
