I was led to believe that these two big cats always avoided each others space.

Poachers, now thats a differant story!

May be in the roman colloseum. But, as far as I know they live naturally in different habitats.

Intersting topic. The Maharaja of Gwalior is reported to have imported some wild African Lions to keep on his game park. Apparently the lions escaped their enclosure and then the local tigers finished them off.

Are there tigers around Gir forest where the asiatic lion is found ?

Did anybody see the Discovery Channel show a few years ago .... think it was called "battle of the big cats" or something. Basically they consulted with many professionals including engineers, physicists, animal biologists etc. to help generate, number crunch and compute the forces, weights, size & strengths of each cat - so they could create a computer graphics generated scrap. If I remember correctly the lion won by a small margin ......

Offtopic true lion story:

Punjabi lady with typical accent telling a highbrow Indian memsahib in Calcutta circa 1972: 'Madam, do you know we export loins to Africa?'

Madam: Really? How interesting
