Indian Runner Ducks

Dreamingwombaat and I acquired two ducks last weekend. They are Indian Runner Ducks and are pretty cute with their lanky shape and strange running habit. We have a male and female, both around 12 weeks old.

The male we called "Ooty" and the female we called "Kerala". Although they are pretty well bred (Ooty's mum and dad won prizes at last year's Adelaide Show), ours are just going to be pets. And no they will not be curried at any time in the future!

Do any of the Indiaphiles here have any knowledge of these animals and is there really any India connection other than their name?

I think they were originally bred in Scotland but don't know much more. Any ideas?

I think they're originally from Malaya and/or Indonesia. Alfred Wallace called them "penguin ducks" in his book the Malay Archipelago.

quack...quackkk....These fellows make a lot of noise.

Also they spoil the entire compound by 'ploughing' with the beak for worms. It shit everyehere........well we had a dozen or so in one of my relatives house. They had it becouse these fellows eat anything.....and never fall sick or something if bad or wrong food is given. The entire foodwaste from the kitchen has been used to feed them.

The interesting thing i like is the colour. The green coat that glitter like a velvete. Also the way they run when tries to catch them.

No one used to kill them for meat. Their meat it seems less fleshy than the chicken. Also their egg is more expensive. According to ayurveda, chicken egg is 'hot' and duck egg is 'cold' (??), means you can eat it in hot season without any 'side effects'

By the way why do a duck follows another duck?
Becouse ,the UKG kids here says, the leader duck cries backk..backk

That's all I waht know about ducks (ofcourse in cricket we have had many ducks though).

Indian Swimmers ???

Some friends of mine keep Indian Runner ducks and they are certain humorous to watch. While on a boat trip in the Kerala backwaters this past Feburary observed an unusual sight. From a distance it looked like a thick liquid was being pumped from a rice paddy into the canal and was spreading across the waters surface. Imagine my surprise when we got close and the liquid turned out to be a huge flock of ducks. Indian Swimmers
The photo shows the flock heading up the ramp almost as fast as they came down. An unusual sight for me, but surely an everyday event in this area. Just wanted to share....
