Guinea pig delhi
Does anyone know of a good vet for guinea pigs in Delhi?
Or at least someone who knows his rabbits?

Little chance there is such vet in India.
Even the UK only recently appointed the first rabbit specialised vet (see:http://news.google.co.in/news/url?sa...F7 878548.stm) Your best chance is Friendicoes as they see lots of different type of animals so may have some experience. Contact details: 271 & 273 Defence Colony Flyover Market, New Delhi-110024. Phone: 011-24314787,011-24320707

thanks, birds.
luckily, my guinea pigs are healthy and much fussed over. but i've always wondered where to go if the need arose. the first vet i contacted suggested giving them (anti) rabies shots when they were babies. guinea pigs are not rabies carriers, so that might have killed them. |

Hi, I have just joined this Forum. I know I am pretty late in replying but it might be of some help.
unfortunately You won't find any vet here who are experts for guinea pigs. I took mine to a normal vet. I beforehand had some knowledge about guinea pigs so I was in a position to make out if the vet was worthwhile. There are a few checks you can try. If the vet knows about Ivermectin and its dosage to Guinea pigs. (It has to be very very less, and according to their weight) If he knows about the medicines which are fatal for guinea pigs, like pencilin-g etc. I can give you the whole list if you want. A few other tips. Tell me if you want them coz i doubt if you would still be in touch with this thread. Do you feed your guinea pigs with hay? They really need it and I am unable to find it here. |

Chill, Sahil. I joined the forum in 2007. The post is of a more recent vintage.
I get updates to all my subscribed threads on mail, so the age of a post is not an issue! Thank you for sharing your info. I would like the whole list, thank you. One vet I contacted advised me to get rabies shots for the pigs??! I used to get my hay from a store in Defence Colony market, Delhi. No idea about Chandigarh, of course. But strangely, my pigs didn't care much about hay. Nor did they touch the expensive imported alfalfa bullets. They did eat some pellets, but not too much. I now feed them grass cut from our Society garden. The maali gives me a big bag every two days. It also serves as their bedding. We change the grass and clean out the cage every other day. I have read that pigs should not be fed a whole lot of veggies, but it's the only thing that they seem to care about:- tomatoes in particular, but also carrots, cucumber, cauliflower leaves, spinach, coriander, as well as fruit skins and pods. So in a nutshell (they like nutshells, even though according to someone on the internet that should have killed them ages back) -stale, imported bagged hay will not keep your pigs happy. Go natural. |

Hey thanx Ronsaik. There is a website www.guinealynx.com
Its an amazing website when it comes to guinea pig care. Just go through their forum once. Its extensive. And I don't think Guinea pigs carry Rabbies. They do get fungal infections and Mites. So ivermectin treatment is required after sometime. I hope your piggies don't scratch themselves. here is the list of dangerous medication Medications to Avoid! This list includes some of the most deadly antibiotics. Derivatives of these drugs may also cause problems. Using drugs like amoxicillin can make a bad situation worse so it is best to avoid them completely. Avoid these medications and their derivatives: amoxicillin (Clavamox) ampicillin bacitracin cefadroxil cephalexin * (derivative: Cefadroxil) cephalosporins cephazolin chlortetracycline clindamycin dihydrostreptomycin erythromycin lincomycin oxytetracycline penicillin streptomycin And its very strange that piggies didn't care much bout hay b'coz they love hay more than anything. It must have happened coz they must have got into habbit of eating veggies, which should be given to them just as treats and not regular food. Rest Americans (from whom I got to know all the details, and they maintain the website mentioned )are over cautious, thats all I can say. But I had a word with vet also. Even he said they require hay for stronger limbs and better immunity. Yes if its not good quality hay, its a big no no! And sorry for screwing up b/w joining date and posting date. I just looked at the date. And good to see that you are taking required pains to keep your piggies happy (Cleaning their cage every two days) And also alfa alfa is recommended only for litters and new mother. Timothy Hay is the best thing to give them. I am fighting hard to find it. |

You are a new member, so your very helpful post giving lots of information about Guinea pig care did not appear straight away.
Before your post had been okayed by the moderators, Brishti suggested that you give some information, not realising that you already had - so Kingstonian was explaining why Brishti's post did not make sense!
