Recommended vets in Goa

Hi Carole,

I am afraid none of the vets are terribly good. There is little analysis by deduction, most just take a quick look and prescribe lots of drugs, especially antibiotics. Be extremely careful as many vets use fake vaccines and sometimes fake drugs. Be especially careful with so-called roaming vets. These are guys who go round on scooters claiming to be vets but their credentials are doubtful.

In Candolim there is a small government veterinary, more or less next to the Old Ice Factory, with a certain lady Dr. Kumar. I would not recommend it other than in emergencies or for stray cattle. I do not know of any other vets in the area.

For simple, routine things (including, vaccinations and routine operations like sterilisation) I would recommend GSPCA in Porvorim (Torda, Salvador-Do-Mundo, opp. Nisha School & Houses of Goa, tel: 241 6180). With them you can be sure you get real vaccines.

For bone problems ask for Nikil at the International Animal Rescue (Madungo Vaddo, Assagao, tel: 226 8328/272). They are also the only one in Goa with an X-ray machine for animals. They are also fine for vaccinations and sterilisations.

For complicated matters Marlyn's veterinary in Porvorim is your best bet (tel: 241 7827). There is a new vet called Marissa who is good.

In India you can also buy animal vaccines yourself (best is Union Pharmacy in Mapusa)and administrate them yourself. Let me know if you need to know more on this.

I hope this helps.

Thank You Birds!!!!!

Hi Birds

Thank you so much for your reply, it really helped
I've contacted the GSPCA which is open 8-6 Mon-Sun and spoke to
Dr Dinella, who told me to bring Small along anytime for her check-up.

Thank You so much for your time and generosity!!!!!!!!!

Hello..

Smally is a black dog ,a real character and a good pal. She was found by IAR as a pup,7 months old. She has been with us for 4 years now.

I sort-of do live here permanently Birds, in between renewing my visa from 6 month to 6 months.

Are you here in Goa on a permanent basis? and do you have pets here?

Hi again,

Lucky Smally! I am always happy to hear when people take care of ex-strays.

Yes, live here all year round, have nine dogs and most of the time some foster pups (3 at the moment, got them from Dinella ).

In my free time I try to do something for strays, the rest of the time I run a small company.

If you ever go to the Travel Bar for dinner, opposite the Old Ice Factory, we might bump into each other. Don't get fooled by the facade, inside it is a cool place, with decent food.

9 dogs - i take my hat off to you Birds

I will make a point of dropping in sometime soon to the Travel Bar. I've heard they organise trips and flights also, which is something I have to do soon enough. Hope to catch you up there.
