came across a dozen or so of these guys on a morning beach walk in Goa -- it was after a high tide and they were dead -- don't know if they were stranded by the tide or got tangled in fishermen's nets, but I had kind of a YIKES moment as I swim here all the time. Anyone know if they are dangerous?

There used to be a lot more than there is now, especially between Calangute area & Fort Aguada,,,,,, Sometimes you wouldn't sea the snakes, just the zig-zag slither marks in the sand. I think you're right,If you saw a bunch together they were probably all dumped together by the fishermen, after becoming tangled in their nets. I don't think they're dangerous |

snake worship in india
when i was in Kerala, too late for me to investigate, i learned of a temple in kerala, just south of Aleppey, near the town of Haripad, that was sacred to snakes, where it is said noone has ever been bitten...and there are snake there
Has anyone ever been there? MANNARSALA UTSAVAM In olden time every Hindu family in Kerala has a serpent-grove. Mannarsala, situated to the north-west of Sri.Subramanyaswamy temple, Haripad, is the seat of the famous temple of Nagaraja (God of Serpents), the largest of its kind in Kerala . Built in a grove the temple is reputed for having 30,000 images of snake-Gods. http://www.kerala.gov.in/knowkerala/temple.htm |

Lots of snakes
I have seen snakes on occassions in the coffee and tea estates of Coorg and Conooor (one of them was a cobra). Also saw two or three poisonous snakes in and around the areas near Ajantha and Ellora caves - the rural villages near these caves. I was told it is snake mating season, hence the snakes had come out. This part was scary. Does anyone know of good hospitals where anti venom is available in south india, hyd, bangalore?

Snake worship is a peculiar specialty of Kerala temples. You may not find snakes here, but idols of different Snake Gods are worshiped. Usually the snake shrines are inside tiny forest like area attached to the temple. You can see a lot of ‘snake stones’ too inside the shrine. They are usually a bit outside the main sanctum.
Almost all the midsized temples in Kerala have snake shrines (called Sarpa Kavu (Snakes Jungle) in local language) . Unlike other deities, the snake deities are usually installed on an open platform. Turmeric powder is the offering. White flowers too are used. Turmeric powder is put on the stone carved deity. |

Just a point abot snakes. Snakes are not agressve creatures. That is they dont attack unlike dogs etc. They bite only if cornered or hurt. They are extremely shy and try to runaway if given a chance. (the only exception is King cobra which is teritorial. That is it has a teritory under its rule and fight off anything entering here. But kingcobra is too shy of humans and usually found only inside forests) In 99% of the bite cases, it's due to accidental stepping on the snakes in the fields.
We have faced the case of snake bites many times in my family's rubber estates. The dry leaves of the rubber plants makes a very thick cover over the land. The plantation workers has to walk from tree to tree(for tapping and collecting the rubber milk) everday. They have to walk over the 1 foot or more thick cover of the fallen dry leaves. Snakes moves freely beneath this cover. One will not know if the next step if placed on the head of a snake. Usually people wear 'gum boots' during the monsoon seasson in the plantation. This is the time the snakes really moves a lot. Also our houses in side the plantation area has 'snake guards' . They are nothing but a long 1 foot wide 1 food deep open duct dug all arround the house. This is to cheat the snakes. When a snake reaches the edge of the duct, it just stretches it head a bit to 'reach' something. If it can't find someting within is stretch (less than 1foot), it dips it's head downward to reach. Here too since the depth is about 1foot, the head of the snake can touch ground. In this case the snake assumes that it is a cliff kind of dead end and turns back! anti venom is available in most of the hospitals in such areas. |

All my life in India, I lost count of number of snakes I have seen in wild. Even a couple of pythons. My naughty dogs chased many snakes and on three occasions forced them to enter my house. All of them were small, harmless ones.
My most frightening encounter was enroute Araku from Vizag. Just as we entered the heavy forest region in the hills, I stopped to take a leak. As i was easing off, I saw a fat, black thing move in the bushes. I was amused, thinking that it was a bandicoot and so aimed my pee over it. A second later, I saw a BIG BIG Black King Cobra zip away. Dunno who scared whom, but when I returned to the car, my zipper was still undone and my legs were shaking. It was then that my dad pointed to a HUGE snake pit nearby.
